E22
Bosch Dishwasher
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The E22 error on your Bosch dishwasher means the filters are blocked or clogged. Water cannot circulate properly through the wash system. Food debris, grease, or buildup is restricting the flow.
Affected Models
- Bosch 300 Series
- Bosch 500 Series
- Bosch 800 Series
- Most Bosch built-in dishwashers
Common Causes
- The bottom mesh filter and micro filter are clogged with food debris
- Large food particles were not rinsed off dishes before loading
- Grease and fat have built up inside the filter assembly over time
- A broken piece of glass or dish is blocking the filter area
- The filter assembly was not installed correctly after cleaning
How to Fix It
-
Open the dishwasher and remove the bottom rack. Locate the filter assembly at the bottom center of the tub.
The filter has a cylindrical piece and a flat mesh screen underneath it.
-
Twist the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift it out. Then lift out the flat mesh filter beneath it.
Some models have a locking tab. Check your manual if it does not twist easily.
-
Rinse both filters under warm running water. Use a soft brush or old toothbrush to scrub away grease and food debris.
For stubborn grease, soak the filters in warm water with dish soap for 15 minutes.
-
Check the filter housing in the dishwasher for any debris, broken glass, or food stuck in the opening.
Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth before reinstalling the filters.
-
Reinstall the flat mesh filter first, then place the cylindrical filter on top and twist clockwise to lock it.
Make sure it is seated properly. A loose filter can cause E22 to return.
When to Call a Professional
If thorough cleaning of the filters does not clear E22, the circulation pump may be partially blocked. A technician can disassemble and clean the pump internals. Expect repair costs of $100–$250 for a pump cleaning or replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean my Bosch dishwasher filters?
Bosch recommends cleaning the filters at least once a month. If you use the dishwasher daily, every two weeks is even better. Regular cleaning prevents E22 and keeps your dishes coming out clean.
Do I need to rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?
You do not need to fully wash them. But scraping off large food pieces is important. Bones, seeds, labels, and toothpicks should never go in. Small food residue is fine — the filters handle that.
Can a clogged filter damage my Bosch dishwasher?
Over time, yes. A clogged filter forces the circulation pump to work harder. This can shorten the pump's life and lead to more expensive repairs. Keeping filters clean is the easiest maintenance you can do.
