E18

Bosch Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The E18 error means your Bosch washer's drain pump is blocked or obstructed. Something is physically preventing the pump from turning properly. The washer cannot drain, so it stops the cycle to protect the pump motor. Cleaning the pump filter is usually the fix — and it's something you can do yourself.

Affected Models

  • WAT28401UC
  • WAW285H2UC
  • WAS24460UC
  • WAE24469GB
  • Many Bosch front-load washers

Common Causes

  • Coins, hair pins, or small items lodged in the pump impeller
  • Large amounts of lint and debris blocking the pump filter
  • Bra underwire or thread wrapped around the pump impeller
  • Drain hose kinked or pressed against a wall, restricting flow
  • Pump impeller cracked or broken, unable to move water effectively

How to Fix It

  1. Select a drain cycle to remove as much water as possible.

Before opening the filter, try running a Drain or Spin cycle. This removes most of the water and makes the next steps far less messy.

  2. Locate the pump filter access panel at the bottom front of the washer.

Place several towels on the floor and a shallow container underneath. Open the panel — it usually snaps off or has a small latch.

  3. Slowly open the filter cap counter-clockwise to drain remaining water.

Do this slowly — water will flow out. Let it drain into your container. Once water stops, fully unscrew and remove the filter.

  4. Remove all debris from the filter and the pump housing.

Check for coins, wire, thread, or hair wrapped around the impeller inside the pump opening. Reach in carefully and remove anything blocking the impeller.

  5. Reinstall the filter, close the panel, and run a drain cycle to test.

Turn the filter cap clockwise until snug — do not overtighten. Run an empty drain cycle. If E18 persists, a technician needs to inspect the pump impeller.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and checking the hose doesn't clear E18, the pump impeller may be damaged. A broken impeller requires a full pump replacement. A licensed appliance technician can replace the Bosch drain pump safely. Expect repair costs of $100–$250 for a pump replacement with labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pump impeller and how does it get blocked?

The impeller is a small spinning disc with fins inside the pump. It spins rapidly to push water through the drain hose. If a coin, underwire, or clump of lint gets past the filter and reaches the impeller, it jams. The pump motor stalls, and the washer shows E18.

How do I prevent the E18 error from coming back?

Check pockets before every wash — coins and small items are the number one cause. Clean the pump filter every 2–3 months. Use a mesh laundry bag for delicate items that shed fibers or have hooks. These habits prevent most pump blockage issues.

Is E18 different from E13 on a Bosch washer?

Yes — they are related but different. E18 means the pump is physically blocked or obstructed. E13 means the drain cycle timed out — water took too long to drain. E13 can be caused by a blocked pump, but also by a kinked hose or faulty pump motor. If you see E18, start with the pump filter.
