E01 Error

Breville Espresso Machine

Severity: Critical

What it means

Breville E01 error means the thermocoil (the heating element) failed to reach brewing temperature within the expected time.
The most common cause is heavy scale buildup insulating the thermocoil.
Run a full descale cycle — this resolves E01 in most cases.

Affected Models

  • Breville Oracle
  • Breville Oracle Touch
  • Breville Dual Boiler
  • Breville Barista Touch

Common Causes

  • Heavy limescale buildup on the thermocoil reducing heat transfer
  • Thermocoil element failing due to age or hard water damage
  • Low water flow starving the thermocoil (flow restriction)
  • Thermal fuse blown on the thermocoil circuit
  • Temperature sensor (NTC) giving an incorrect reading

How to Fix It

  1. Run a full descale cycle

Fill the water tank with Breville descaler mixed per the instructions, or 1 tablespoon of citric acid per litre of water.
Enter descale mode (hold the filter button for 5 seconds on most models — check your manual).
Let the full cycle complete — do not interrupt it.
Run two full tanks of clean water through after to flush residue.
E01 caused by scale buildup is usually resolved after descaling.

  2. Check water flow

A blocked intake filter can restrict flow and starve the thermocoil.
Remove the water tank and locate the mesh filter at the bottom of the tank socket.
Clean it gently with a soft brush under running water.
Restricted flow causes the thermocoil to time out without reaching temperature.

  3. Prime the pump

If the machine was stored empty or just received new water, air in the pump can prevent flow.
With the portafilter removed, run hot water output for 30 seconds to purge air.
Air locks prevent the thermocoil from receiving water and cause E01.

  4. Reset the machine

Turn the machine off at the power switch.
Unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds.
Plug back in and power on.
An E01 from a temporary sensor fault may clear with a power reset.

  5. Contact Breville support

If E01 persists after descaling and the steps above, the thermocoil or temperature sensor may need replacement.
