C6

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

Severity: Critical

What it means

Instant Pot C6 means the internal temperature exceeded the maximum safe limit and the overheat protection activated.
The unit shuts down to prevent damage and protect the food inside.
Insufficient liquid is by far the most common cause — always use at least 1 cup of thin liquid for pressure cooking.

Affected Models

  • Instant Pot Duo
  • Instant Pot Duo Plus
  • Instant Pot Ultra
  • Instant Pot Pro
  • Instant Pot Lux
  • Instant Pot Duo Nova

Common Causes

  • Not enough liquid in the pot — the most common cause, especially with thick sauces or dry ingredients
  • Sealing ring not seated correctly — the unit keeps heating while trying to build pressure that will not come
  • Steam release valve left in the Venting position — steam escapes before pressure and heat can build safely
  • Thick sauce or paste coating the bottom of the inner pot before pressure builds — triggers Burn, then C6 if not stopped
  • Blocked steam release valve preventing heat from escaping when needed

How to Fix It

  1. Press Cancel and leave the unit completely alone until it has cooled — at least 30 minutes. Do not attempt to open the lid while it is hot and pressurised.

The lid float valve locks when there is pressure or heat inside.
Wait until the float valve drops before attempting to open.
    Forcing the lid is dangerous.

  2. Once the float valve has dropped, move the steam release valve to Venting and let any remaining steam escape before opening the lid.

Hold a cloth over the steam valve — any steam remaining will release quickly.
Keep your face and hands clear.

  3. Open the lid and check the liquid level. If the bottom of the pot looks dry or scorched, insufficient liquid was the cause. Add at least 1 cup of water or thin broth.

If using a thick sauce (tomato paste, coconut milk, creamy soups), always add water underneath or around it — thick sauces scorch before pressure builds.

  4. Remove the lid and check that the silicone sealing ring is properly seated in the full circular groove. A gap or lifted section prevents the lid from sealing, forcing the unit to keep heating without building pressure.

The sealing ring should sit flat and snug all the way around.
Press it firmly into the groove if any section has lifted.

  5. Ensure the steam release valve is set to Sealing (not Venting) before restarting. Restart the cook cycle and monitor the display during the pressure build phase.

The unit should reach pressure within 5–15 minutes depending on the quantity.
If C6 returns before pressure is reached, there is a recurring seal or liquid issue.

When to Call a Professional

A single C6 event from insufficient liquid does not damage the unit.
If C6 appears consistently even with correct liquid levels and a properly seated seal, the heating element or control board has been damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did C6 damage my Instant Pot permanently?

One C6 event from insufficient liquid rarely causes permanent damage — the overheat protection is designed for exactly this situation.
If C6 appeared, the food inside may be scorched but the unit itself is likely fine after cooling.
Repeated C6 events from dry cooking can shorten the life of the heating element.

Instant Pot showed Burn before C6 — should I have acted sooner?

Yes.
The Burn notice is an early warning that the bottom of the pot is scorching.
If you cancel, add liquid, and restart when Burn appears, C6 will not follow.
Always respond to a Burn notice immediately.
