AE

LG Dishwasher

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

The AE error means your LG dishwasher's leak sensor detected water in the base pan. Water has leaked from somewhere inside the machine and pooled at the bottom. This is a critical error — the dishwasher shuts down immediately to prevent flooding. Act quickly to avoid water damage to your kitchen floor and cabinets.

Affected Models

  • LDF5545ST
  • LDT5678SS
  • LDFN4542S
  • LDT7808SS
  • Most LG dishwasher models

Common Causes

  • Loose or cracked water inlet hose connection at the back of the dishwasher
  • Damaged door gasket allowing water to drip down into the base
  • Overuse of dishwasher detergent creating excess suds that overflow
  • Cracked or leaking internal hose or pump seal inside the cabinet
  • Float switch in the base pan stuck or malfunctioning, giving a false alarm

How to Fix It

  1. Cancel the cycle and turn off the dishwasher at the power switch.

Press Cancel/Drain to run a quick drain cycle first if available. This removes standing water before you open the door.

  2. Turn off the water supply valve under the sink.

This is usually a small knob or lever on the hot water pipe under your kitchen sink. Turn it clockwise to close.

  3. Pull the dishwasher forward slightly and look underneath.

Look for puddles or moisture on the floor under the machine. Check the water inlet hose where it connects to the back of the dishwasher.

  4. Inspect the door gasket all the way around the door opening.

Look for cracks, tears, or spots where the gasket is pulling away from the frame. A damaged gasket is one of the most common causes of the AE error.

  5. Tilt the dishwasher forward carefully to drain the base pan.

Lean the machine forward about 45 degrees to let water in the base pan drain out through the front. Dry the pan with towels, then reset and test.

When to Call a Professional

If you cannot find a visible leak source, call a technician. Internal hose and pump seal leaks require partial disassembly of the dishwasher. An appliance technician can locate and fix the leak safely. Expect repair costs of $100–$300 depending on the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I drain the base pan after an AE error?

Tilt the dishwasher forward about 45 degrees. Water will flow out of the base pan through the front of the machine. Have towels ready on the floor. Once drained and dried, the sensor resets and you can restart the machine.

Can too much detergent cause the AE error?

Yes — excess suds can overflow the tub and reach the base pan sensor. Always use the amount of detergent recommended on the package. Never use regular dish soap in a dishwasher — it creates far too many suds.

Will the AE error go away on its own?

Not until the water in the base pan is removed. The float sensor stays triggered as long as water is present. You must tilt and drain the base pan, then dry it completely. Only then will the AE error clear and allow the machine to run.
