IE

LG Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The IE error means your LG washer is not getting enough water. The machine expected to fill up but the water level is too low or not rising at all. This is usually caused by closed water valves, kinked hoses, or low water pressure.

Affected Models

  • LG WM3900HWA
  • LG WM4000HWA
  • LG WT7300CW
  • LG WM2250CW
  • LG WT7150CW

Common Causes

  • The hot or cold water supply valves behind the washer are not fully open
  • The water inlet hoses are kinked, crushed, or frozen in cold weather
  • The inlet hose filter screens are clogged with sediment or mineral buildup
  • Your home has low water pressure, so the washer fills too slowly
  • The water inlet valve inside the washer has failed and will not open

How to Fix It

  1. Check the water supply valves behind the washer. Make sure both hot and cold are turned fully open.

Even if you only wash in cold water, some LG models require both valves to be open.

  2. Inspect the water inlet hoses for kinks or tight bends. Straighten any hoses that are pinched.

Pull the washer out from the wall slightly if the hoses are being crushed against the wall.

  3. Turn off the water valves, disconnect the hoses from the back of the washer, and check the small filter screens inside the hose connections.

These screens catch sediment. Clean them with an old toothbrush under running water.

  4. Reconnect the hoses, turn the valves back on, and check for leaks at the connections.

Hand-tighten the hose connections. Do not overtighten or you may damage the threads.

  5. Run a quick wash cycle to see if the IE error is cleared.

If the error returns and you have good water pressure at other faucets in the house, the inlet valve inside the washer may be faulty.

When to Call a Professional

Check the water valves and hoses first — these are free and easy fixes. If everything looks good but the washer still will not fill, the water inlet valve may need replacement. Inlet valve replacement typically costs $120 to $200 with parts and labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my LG washer show IE when the water is turned on?

The valves may be on but the inlet hose screens could be clogged. Mineral deposits and sediment build up over time and block water flow. Remove the hoses and clean the small mesh screens at the connection points.

Can low water pressure in my house cause the IE error?

Yes, if your home water pressure is below about 20 psi, the washer may not fill fast enough. Try running the washer when no other water is being used in the house. If low pressure is a constant problem, you may need a plumber to check your main supply.

My LG washer fills with cold water but not hot. Is that an IE error?

This can trigger IE on some models that expect both hot and cold water. Check that the hot water valve is open and the hot water heater is working. Also make sure the hot water hose is connected to the hot inlet on the washer, not swapped with the cold.
