SE

Samsung Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The SE error (sometimes shown as 5E on older models) on newer Samsung dishwashers means a button on the control panel is stuck, being held down too long, or the touch panel is malfunctioning. The dishwasher locks up to prevent it from running with unintended commands. This can happen from a physical button jam, moisture on the touch panel, or a faulty control panel. Most SE errors can be cleared at home without a technician.

Affected Models

  • DW80R9950UG
  • DW80R5061US
  • DW80T5550US
  • DW80M2020US
  • Samsung dishwashers with touch control panels

Common Causes

  • A button on the control panel is physically stuck in a pressed position
  • Moisture or cleaning product residue on the touch panel causing a phantom press
  • Detergent or food debris lodged around a button preventing it from releasing
  • The control panel flex cable has shifted or come loose causing erratic button signals
  • The main control board is malfunctioning and interpreting phantom button presses

How to Fix It

  1. Press and hold the Start/Reset button for 3-5 seconds to cancel the current cycle. Then power off the dishwasher at the control panel. Wait 1-2 minutes and power it back on. This clears most temporary SE errors caused by software glitches.

If SE appears immediately when you power on, it's a persistent panel issue rather than a cycle glitch.

  2. Inspect all buttons on the control panel. Press each one gently and release it — each should spring back cleanly with a faint click. If any button feels sticky, mushy, or doesn't spring back, that's your culprit. Try pressing it several times rapidly to free it.

Dried detergent and food splash around buttons is extremely common. Wipe the panel with a barely damp cloth to clean around buttons.

  3. Wipe the entire control panel with a dry microfiber cloth. Moisture on a touch panel can cause it to register phantom presses. After wiping, let the panel air-dry for 10-15 minutes before powering the dishwasher back on.

Avoid spraying cleaners directly onto the control panel — always spray onto a cloth first.

  4. Check the Child Lock setting. If Child Lock is accidentally activated, the panel will appear locked and may display SE on some models. Press and hold the relevant Child Lock button combination (check your user manual — usually holding two buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds) to toggle it off.

Child Lock is a common accidental activation — especially if kids are around or if buttons got pressed while loading dishes.

  5. If the code persists after all of the above, the control panel module needs replacement. Samsung dishwasher control panels usually disconnect from the door with one ribbon cable and a few screws — it's a relatively simple DIY part swap on most models.

Order by your exact model number. Control panels are not universal between Samsung models.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning and resets don't clear SE, the control panel or main board likely needs replacement. Control panel replacement is a DIY-friendly repair on most Samsung dishwashers — it usually involves removing a few screws and a connector. A new control panel costs $50-$120 for the part. A technician charges $150-$300 total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SE the same as the 5E drain error?

On older Samsung dishwashers, 5E means a drain error. On newer Samsung models with letter-based codes, SE is a different error related to the control panel or a stuck button. Check your model's manual to confirm which error you have. The fix is completely different for each.

Why did SE appear out of nowhere with nobody touching the dishwasher?

High humidity, steam from a nearby pot, or moisture that crept under the panel can trigger phantom button presses on touch panels. This is common in kitchens with poor ventilation. Wipe the panel dry and run the dishwasher with the range hood on to reduce steam near the appliance.

Can a control panel replacement be done DIY?

Yes, on most Samsung dishwashers this is one of the easier DIY repairs. The control panel is mounted inside the door with screws accessible when the door is open. Disconnect the ribbon cable, swap the panel, reconnect, and reassemble. Watch a YouTube video specific to your model before starting — it usually takes 30-45 minutes.
