F6

Whirlpool Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The F6 error means your Whirlpool dishwasher is not filling with enough water. The dishwasher expects a certain water level within a set time after starting. If it does not reach that level, it stops and displays F6.

Affected Models

  • WDT750SAHZ
  • WDF520PADM
  • WDT970SAHZ
  • WDTA50SAHZ
  • Most Whirlpool built-in dishwashers

Common Causes

  • The water supply valve under the sink is turned off or partially closed
  • The inlet water supply hose is kinked or blocked
  • The water inlet valve on the dishwasher has failed and is not opening
  • The home's water pressure is too low to fill the dishwasher adequately
  • The inlet valve screen is clogged with sediment or mineral deposits

How to Fix It

  1. Check that the water supply valve under the kitchen sink is fully open.

Turn it counterclockwise until it stops. A partially closed valve reduces water flow enough to trigger F6.

  2. Inspect the water supply hose running from the valve to the dishwasher.

Look for kinks or tight bends. Straighten the hose if kinked.

  3. Turn off the water supply, disconnect the inlet hose from the dishwasher inlet valve, and check the small screen filter.

Mineral buildup or sediment can clog this screen. Clean it with a small brush under running water.

  4. Test your home's water pressure with a gauge on an outdoor hose bib.

Dishwashers need at least 20 PSI (ideally 40–120 PSI) to fill properly. Low pressure is a plumbing issue.

  5. If all of the above check out, replace the water inlet valve.

The valve is located behind the kick plate at the bottom front of the dishwasher. It costs $25–$60 and replacement is a manageable DIY repair.

When to Call a Professional

If the water supply and hose check out fine, the inlet valve itself has likely failed. This is a common repair — inlet valves cost $25–$60. A technician can also test for low water pressure and identify whether the issue is with the valve or your home's plumbing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if the water inlet valve has failed?

If the supply is on, the hose is clear, and the screen is clean — but the dishwasher still does not fill — the valve is the most likely culprit. You can confirm with a multimeter: test the solenoid for continuity. No continuity means the valve is dead.

Can low water pressure in my house cause F6?

Yes. If your home has low water pressure — common in older homes or when other fixtures are in use — the dishwasher may not fill fast enough. A plumber can test and improve your water pressure if needed.

Where is the water inlet valve on a Whirlpool dishwasher?

It is behind the lower kick plate at the front of the dishwasher. Remove the two screws holding the kick plate, and the valve is visible on the left side near the water supply hose connection.
