F8

Whirlpool Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The F8 error means the drain pump in your Whirlpool dishwasher is not working correctly. The drain pump removes dirty water from the dishwasher at the end of each cycle. If it fails, water stays in the bottom of the dishwasher and the cycle cannot complete.

Affected Models

  • WDT750SAHZ
  • WDF520PADM
  • WDT970SAHZ
  • WDTA50SAHZ
  • Most Whirlpool built-in dishwashers

Common Causes

  • The drain pump motor has burned out or seized
  • Food debris, glass, or a foreign object is jamming the drain pump impeller
  • The drain hose is kinked, blocked, or not properly elevated (allowing backflow)
  • The sink drain or garbage disposal connection is clogged
  • The wiring harness to the drain pump is loose or has a bad connection

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the lower rack and clean the dishwasher filter assembly at the bottom of the tub.

A clogged filter restricts water flow to the drain pump. Rinse the filter under running water.

  2. Look into the sump area (below the filter) with a flashlight for debris blocking the drain pump.

Remove any glass shards, food particles, or foreign objects you find. Use tongs or gloves — glass edges are sharp.

  3. Check the drain hose for kinks or blockages.

The drain hose should have a high loop under the sink or connect to an air gap. This prevents backflow. Make sure it is not kinked behind the dishwasher.

  4. Check the sink drain or garbage disposal inlet where the drain hose connects.

If you recently installed a new garbage disposal, make sure the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet has been removed.

  5. If all checks pass but F8 remains, the drain pump motor needs replacement.

The pump is located under the tub. The dishwasher typically needs to be pulled out and tilted to access it.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and drain hose does not resolve F8, the drain pump motor may need replacement. Drain pump motors cost $40–$100. If you are not comfortable pulling the dishwasher out and accessing the pump, a technician can handle the replacement quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my dishwasher drain pump is jammed vs. burned out?

If you can hear the pump humming but water is not draining, it is likely jammed. If the pump makes no sound at all, it may be burned out electrically. A jammed pump can sometimes be freed by removing the blockage. A burned out pump needs replacement.

Why is there water sitting in the bottom of my Whirlpool dishwasher?

A small amount of water at the very bottom of the tub is normal — it keeps the pump seal wet. But if there is an inch or more of water after the cycle ends, the drain pump is not removing it. F8 will usually accompany this situation.

Can a clogged sink drain cause the F8 error?

Yes. The dishwasher drains into the same sink drain pipe. If that pipe is partially blocked, the dishwasher water has nowhere to go. If your sink is also draining slowly, clear the sink drain first before investigating the dishwasher.
