P1230

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

P1230 indicates a fault in the fuel pump low-speed circuit. On vehicles with a two-speed fuel pump relay, the PCM switches between low and high speed based on demand. When the low-speed circuit fails, the PCM sets P1230. This is common on Ford vehicles equipped with the Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) and dual-speed fuel pump relay systems. You may notice extended crank times or a slight hesitation at startup.

Affected Models

  • Common in Ford Mustang with V6 and V8 engines
  • Common in Ford F-150 and F-250 with modular V8
  • Common in Ford Explorer and Expedition
  • Common in Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car

Common Causes

  • Faulty fuel pump relay for the low-speed circuit
  • Open or shorted wiring in the fuel pump low-speed circuit
  • Blown fuse supplying power to the low-speed fuel pump relay
  • Failed Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch that has tripped and not been reset
  • Failing PCM fuel pump driver circuit

How to Fix It

  1. Check and reset the Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch. On Ford vehicles it is usually located in the trunk or under the passenger-side kick panel.

The IFS switch trips during a collision to cut fuel. It can also trip from a large bump. Press the button on top to reset it.

  2. Inspect the fuse box for any blown fuses related to the fuel pump circuit.

On most Ford vehicles there is a high-current fuse in the underhood power distribution box specifically for the fuel pump.

  3. Locate and test the low-speed fuel pump relay. Swap it with an identical relay if testing is not possible.

The fuel pump relay is typically in the underhood fuse/relay box. Relay positions are shown on the box lid.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness from the relay to the fuel pump for damage, corrosion, or broken wires.

The harness runs along the frame rail to the fuel tank. Check the full length for chafing or corrosion.

  5. If all of the above checks out, connect a scan tool and monitor fuel pump command signals. If the PCM is not sending the correct signal, PCM diagnosis is needed.

PCM fuel pump driver failures are rare but do occur on high-mileage Ford vehicles.

When to Call a Professional

Fuel pump relay replacement is $15 to $50. Fuse replacement is minimal cost. Wiring repair for harness damage is $100 to $300 at a shop. If the PCM fuel pump driver has failed, PCM replacement costs $500 to $1,200.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can P1230 cause my car to stall?

Yes, it can. If the fuel pump cannot switch to low-speed operation correctly, fuel pressure may be inconsistent. This can lead to stalling at idle or hesitation during light throttle conditions.

What is the Inertia Fuel Shutoff switch and where do I find it?

It is a safety device that cuts power to the fuel pump after a collision. On Ford cars it is often in the trunk near the rear seat or under the passenger-side kick panel. Look for a small cylindrical device with a rubber button on top — press the button to reset it.

Does P1230 always mean the fuel pump is failing?

No. P1230 is a circuit code — it means there is a fault in the electrical circuit controlling the pump, not necessarily the pump itself. A bad relay, blown fuse, or tripped IFS switch is far more common than a pump failure.
