P1270
Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
P1270 is a Ford and Mazda-specific code indicating the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor is out of self-test range. The APP sensor measures how far you press the accelerator pedal and sends that signal to the PCM. When the sensor voltage falls outside the expected range during a self-test, P1270 is set. Symptoms include reduced engine power, erratic throttle response, or the vehicle entering limp mode.
Affected Models
- Common in Ford F-150 and F-250 with electronic throttle control
- Common in Ford Mustang with drive-by-wire throttle
- Common in Ford Focus and Fusion with APP sensor
- Common in Mazda 6 and Mazda 3 with electronic throttle body
Common Causes
- Faulty Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor sending out-of-range voltage
- Corroded or damaged wiring connector at the APP sensor
- Damaged accelerator pedal assembly with a worn sensor track
- Short circuit or open circuit in the APP sensor signal wire
- PCM miscalibration or fault affecting throttle input interpretation
How to Fix It
-
Connect a scan tool with live data and monitor APP sensor voltage at rest and when the pedal is fully depressed.
At rest the voltage is typically 0.5–1.0V. At full throttle it should reach 4.0–4.5V. An erratic or flat-line reading points to a failed sensor.
-
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the pedal assembly for corrosion, bent pins, or damage.
Floor mat interference or moisture intrusion under the dash can damage the APP sensor connector.
-
Check for any mechanical binding in the accelerator pedal. Ensure the pedal moves freely and returns to rest on its own.
A sticking pedal can cause the sensor to read an incorrect position at rest, triggering P1270.
-
If the wiring and connector are good and the sensor reading is abnormal, replace the accelerator pedal assembly.
On most Ford and Mazda vehicles, the APP sensor is integral to the pedal assembly and cannot be replaced separately.
-
After replacement, clear codes with a scan tool. Perform the PCM throttle relearn procedure if required by the vehicle.
On some Ford models, the PCM must relearn the pedal position range before normal operation resumes.
When to Call a Professional
APP sensor replacement usually requires replacing the entire accelerator pedal assembly. Pedal assembly replacement costs $80 to $200 in parts. Professional labor adds $50 to $150. If throttle body recalibration is needed, a dealer scan tool is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to drive with P1270?
Use caution. If the vehicle enters limp mode, speed and acceleration will be severely limited. Erratic throttle response is a safety risk. Have it diagnosed before driving long distances.
Can a dirty or stuck pedal cause P1270?
Yes. If the pedal does not return fully to rest position, the APP sensor reads a slightly open throttle. This can fall outside the self-test range and trigger P1270. Clean and inspect the pedal mechanism before replacing parts.
Does P1270 mean my throttle body is bad?
Not usually. P1270 is specific to the accelerator pedal position sensor, not the throttle body. The throttle body has its own separate position sensor and set of codes. Focus diagnosis on the pedal assembly and its wiring first.
