P1614

Universal (All Makes) Vehicle (OBD-II)

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

P1614 is a manufacturer-specific code most commonly seen on Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. It relates to an immobilizer/anti-theft system communication fault between the ECM and the NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System) module. The ECM and the NATS module exchange a security code on every startup. When this handshake fails, P1614 is stored and the engine may crank but not start. A faulty key, transponder issue, or NATS module failure are common causes.

Affected Models

  • Common in Nissan Altima, Maxima, and Sentra
  • Common in Nissan Frontier and Pathfinder
  • Common in Infiniti G35, G37, and FX35
  • Seen in Nissan 350Z and 370Z

Common Causes

  • Transponder chip in the key is failing or has been damaged
  • Wrong or unprogrammed key used to start the vehicle
  • NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System) control module failure
  • Wiring fault or poor connection between the NATS antenna ring and ECM
  • ECM internal failure causing the security handshake to fail

How to Fix It

  1. Try starting the vehicle with a known-good spare key if one is available.

A damaged or demagnetized key transponder is the simplest and cheapest cause to test first.

  2. Check the key fob battery if your key has a remote. A dead battery can affect some transponder systems.

Replace the key fob battery with a fresh CR2032 before further diagnosis.

  3. Inspect the NATS antenna ring around the ignition cylinder for damage or loose connections.

The antenna ring reads the key transponder chip. If it is cracked or disconnected, the handshake will fail.

  4. Have the key transponder tested at a Nissan dealer or locksmith with programming equipment.

A transponder that reads weakly or intermittently can cause P1614 even if the key appears normal.

  5. If the key and antenna are good, have the NATS module and ECM tested at a Nissan dealer with Consult III diagnostic software.

Module-level diagnosis requires dealer-level equipment — standard OBD scanners cannot reprogram the NATS system.

When to Call a Professional

Key programming at a Nissan dealer costs $50 to $150 per key. NATS module replacement is $100 to $300 in parts plus labor. ECM replacement is $300 to $900 depending on the model. A dealer with a Consult III scanner is strongly recommended for this repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will P1614 prevent my car from starting?

It can, yes. When the NATS handshake fails, Nissan vehicles are designed to disable fuel injection as an anti-theft measure. The engine will crank but not start, or may start briefly and immediately stall.

Can I program a new key myself for a Nissan with P1614?

Not easily. Nissan key programming typically requires either two working keys already programmed plus a blank, or a dealer Consult III scanner. DIY NATS programming is not possible on most models without specialized tools.

Is P1614 covered under warranty?

It depends on your vehicle's age and warranty status. An immobilizer module failure on a newer vehicle may be covered under a bumper-to-bumper warranty. Transponder keys are consumable parts and are generally not covered by standard warranties.
