Descaling Alert
Breville Coffee Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
The descaling alert or CLEAN ME light means the boiler and internal circuit have scale buildup that needs to be removed.
Use Breville's descaler solution and follow the built-in descale cycle.
Takes around 25–30 minutes.
Affected Models
- Breville Barista Express
- Breville Barista Pro
- Breville Oracle
- Breville Oracle Touch
- Breville Dual Boiler
- Breville Bambino Plus
- Breville Infuser
Common Causes
- Mineral scale from hard water accumulating in the boiler and group head
- Water filter exhausted and no longer reducing mineral content
- High local water hardness accelerating scale formation
How to Fix It
-
Purchase Breville descaler.
Use Breville's own descaling solution or a citric acid-based descaler.
Avoid vinegar — it can leave residual flavour and may damage internal components over time. -
Prepare the machine.
Empty the drip tray and water tank.
Prepare the descaler solution as directed on the product packaging and fill the tank.
Place a large container (at least 2 litres) under the group head and steam wand. -
Start the descale cycle.
On most Breville models, press and hold the relevant button combination to enter descale mode (check your manual for the exact method).
The machine cycles water through the boiler in stages — do not interrupt it. -
Complete the rinse phase and reset the alert.
When prompted, empty and refill the tank with fresh water for the rinse phase.
The CLEAN ME light or descaling indicator resets automatically when the full cycle completes.
When to Call a Professional
Descaling is a routine user maintenance task.
If the alert resets and reappears within days of completing a full descale, contact Breville support — the scale counter may need recalibration.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often does a Breville espresso machine need descaling?
Breville recommends descaling every 2–3 months with average use, or when the machine's CLEAN ME indicator activates. Using a Breville water filter reduces the frequency.
Will descaling fix a Breville machine that is making weak espresso?
If weak shots are caused by scale restricting flow through the group head, descaling will help. However, weak espresso can also be caused by a too-coarse grind setting or stale coffee beans.
