Overheating

Vantrue Dash Cam

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Vantrue dash cam overheating is caused by the camera sitting on a windscreen in a hot parked car.
Interior car temperatures can reach 80°C in summer, exceeding the camera operating limit.
Remove the camera when parking in direct sunlight.

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the dash cam when parking in sun

A car in direct sunlight can reach 70–80°C inside in summer, which exceeds the Vantrue operating temperature limit.
Unclip the camera from the mount and store it in the glove box or under a seat to prevent heat damage.

  2. Use a windscreen sun shade

A reflective sun shade placed on the windscreen dramatically reduces interior car temperature and protects the dash cam during parking without requiring manual removal.

  3. Allow the camera to cool before restarting

If the Vantrue shut down due to overheating, open the car windows and run air conditioning for 5–10 minutes before pressing Power.
Restarting a hot camera triggers another immediate thermal shutdown.

  4. Mount the camera lower on the windscreen

The top of the windscreen receives the most solar heating from the roof.
Mounting the camera at mid-height on the windscreen (still within the wiper sweep zone) reduces direct heat exposure.

  5. Disable parking mode in extreme heat

Running parking mode in a parked car during a hot summer day significantly increases the risk of overheating.
Disable parking mode during summer or use a solution that powers the camera off when interior temperature exceeds a set threshold.

  6. Contact Vantrue support for thermal damage

If the Vantrue overheats at normal operating temperatures (e.g. while driving in mild weather), or if the camera shows permanent damage (discolouration, warping, image distortion), contact Vantrue support at vantrue.net.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vantrue dash cam showing high temperature warning — what does it look like?

Some Vantrue models display a temperature icon or the message High Temperature on screen before shutting down.
Others simply power off without warning when thermal protection activates.

Vantrue dash cam felt very hot after a drive in summer — is this normal?

A warm camera after driving in summer is normal, but it should not be too hot to touch.
If it is uncomfortably hot, improve ventilation by mounting it lower and ensuring the suction cup mount is not trapping heat against the windscreen.

Vantrue N4 or E1 Lite overheating in parking mode — can I set a temperature limit?

The Vantrue hardwire kit has a voltage-based cutoff but not a temperature-based one.
The only current workaround is to disable parking mode during high-heat periods or to remove the camera when parking in the sun.
