HS

LG Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What it means

LG dryer HS is the humidity-sensor code.
LG's exact wording: 'HS error code on the dryer's display indicates that the dryer has detected an error with the HUMIDITY SENSOR.'
The humidity sensor is two small metal strips inside the drum that read the moisture level of the clothes to control cycle length on Auto/Sensor cycles.
Often it's just residue blocking the sensor.

Affected Models

  • LG DLE / DLG series electric and gas dryers
  • LG DLEX / DLGX TurboSteam series with steam
  • LG Signature and Studio series premium dryers
  • LG DLHC series compact heat pump dryers
  • LG WashTower combo units (shared dryer module)

Common Causes

  • Dryer sheet residue coating the sensor strips inside the drum
  • Fabric softener buildup on the sensors over many months
  • Sensor strips corroded after long use
  • Sensor wiring loose at the harness behind the drum
  • Failed humidity sensor (after cleaning is confirmed)

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the sensor strips inside the drum.

Open the dryer door and look at the inside front of the drum.
You'll see two small metal strips, about 2-3 inches long, running parallel to each other.
These are the humidity sensors — clothes tumble against them and the dryer reads moisture by measuring conductivity.

  2. Wipe with rubbing alcohol.

Dampen a soft cloth with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl 70% or higher).
Wipe the sensor strips firmly, removing any visible film, residue, or discoloration.
This is the single most effective HS fix — dryer sheet residue is the most common cause.

  3. Let the alcohol fully evaporate.

Wait 2-3 minutes for the alcohol to fully evaporate before running a cycle.
The strips should be completely dry and clean before you start the dryer.

  4. Power cycle for 5 minutes.

Unplug the dryer for 5 minutes (or trip the breaker), then plug back in.
This clears the logged HS state from the control after you've cleaned the strips.

  5. Test with an Auto cycle.

Run a Normal or Auto-sensor cycle (not Time Dry) — that's the only cycle type that actually uses the humidity sensor.
If the cycle completes normally without HS, the cleaning fixed it.

When to Call a Professional

Most HS cases clear after a thorough sensor strip cleaning.
Schedule LG service only if the strips are confirmed clean and HS still appears on Sensor/Auto cycles after a power reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using the dryer with HS by switching to Time Dry?

Yes, temporarily.
Time Dry cycles ignore the humidity sensor and just run for the duration you set — so HS won't trigger on Time Dry, even with a faulty sensor.
The downside is you lose the auto-shutoff feature, which means either over-drying clothes (wear and tear, shrinkage) or under-drying them.
Clean the sensors when you have 10 minutes — it's the simplest possible fix.
