OE

LG Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What it means

LG dryer OE (Output Error) is the older display variant of LG's drainage code — same underlying fault as drn on newer panels.
LG groups them together: water container full, kinked drain hose, or air in the drain pump.
If your dryer is a condenser or heat pump model and you see OE, the fix sequence is identical to drn.

Affected Models

  • Older LG ventless condenser dryers (segment-display models)
  • Older LG heat pump dryers before the dot-matrix display generation
  • LG WashTower heat pump units of earlier generations (where applicable)
  • OE does not apply to standard vented LG dryers (DLE / DLG / DLEX / DLGX) — those vent outside and have no water container
  • Newer LG models with the same fault display 'drn' instead

Common Causes

  • Removable water container at the top of the dryer is full
  • Direct-to-drain hose (if installed) kinked behind the unit
  • Drain pump filter clogged with accumulated lint
  • Air trapped in the drain pump after install or service
  • Standpipe drain blocked or routed above the dryer's recommended height

How to Fix It

  1. Empty the water container first.

If your LG dryer has a water container (most condenser and heat pump models), it's at the top right of the door panel.
Pull it out, empty into the sink, push it back in until it clicks.
An overfull container is by far the most common OE trigger.

  2. Inspect the direct-drain hose.

If you've plumbed the dryer to drain straight into a standpipe (skipping the container), check the small drain hose at the back of the unit for kinks or crushed sections.
The hose needs a clean slope downward to the standpipe with no high loops or sharp bends.

  3. Clean the drain pump filter.

Pull the kickplate off the bottom of the dryer.
Find the small drain pump filter cap, put a shallow tray underneath, unscrew counter-clockwise.
Rinse off accumulated lint and refit.

  4. Restart and monitor.

Close the door firmly and start a Time Dry cycle.
If OE doesn't reappear in the first 2-3 minutes, the fix worked.
If OE returns immediately, the drain pump itself may have failed — schedule LG service.

When to Call a Professional

OE clears with the same checks as drn: empty container, clear hose, check pump filter.
Schedule LG service only if all three are clear and OE still appears immediately on the next cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my LG dryer show OE instead of drn?

Display capability.
Older LG dryers used segment displays (like a calculator) that could show 2-3 letters cleanly — OE renders crisply on those.
Newer LG dryers use dot-matrix displays that can render full words, so LG switched to 'drn' which is more self-explanatory.
Same fault internally — LG even lists them together on the same support page.
