F3E2

Whirlpool Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Whirlpool dryer F3E2 is the moisture-sensor-no-data code.
Whirlpool's exact wording: F3E2 occurs when 'five consecutive loads are dried without registering moisture sensor data.'
This isn't a sensor failure — it's the control noticing that the sensor strips in the drum haven't been touched by wet clothes for five cycles in a row, often because the dryer is unlevel or loads have been too small to reach the sensor.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool WED4815 / WED4850 / WED5000 series electric dryers
  • Whirlpool WED7120 / WED8120 / WED9620 Cabrio series
  • Whirlpool WGD4815 / WGD5000 / WGD7120 series gas dryers
  • Whirlpool Compact Heat Pump dryers (WHD862, WHD560)
  • Same F+E codes appear on Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana dryers (shared platform)

Common Causes

  • Dryer not level — clothes settle to one side away from the sensor
  • Very small loads — single items don't touch the sensor strips
  • Only Timed Dry cycles used (Timed Dry doesn't use the moisture sensor)
  • Sensor strips inside the drum coated with dryer sheet residue
  • Damaged moisture sensor wiring (if cleaning and level-checking don't help)

How to Fix It

  1. Press POWER to clear F3E2.

Whirlpool: 'Pressing the Power button will clear the error code and allow you to restart the machine.'
The code clears immediately — but unless you address the underlying cause, it'll reappear after the next five small-load or unlevel cycles.

  2. Check that the dryer is level.

Whirlpool: 'A dryer that is not level may prevent clothes from adequately touching the moisture sensors.'
Press down on each corner of the top — any rocking means a leg needs adjustment.
Twist the front legs in or out until the dryer sits firm with no rocking.

  3. Run larger loads.

Whirlpool: 'Very small loads or single items may not make contact with the moisture sensors.'
The sensor strips run along the inside front of the drum — clothes need volume to tumble against them.
Add a few towels to balance very small loads.

  4. Switch to Automatic cycles.

Whirlpool: 'Try larger loads or use an Automatic cycle verses a Timed Dry cycle.'
The moisture sensor is only consulted by Automatic cycles (Normal, Heavy Duty, Delicates).
If you only ever use Timed Dry, the sensor never gets used and the control eventually logs F3E2.

  5. Wipe the sensor strips clean.

Open the drum and look at the front interior — you'll see two small metal strips just inside the drum opening.
    These are the moisture sensors.
Over time, dryer sheet residue, fabric softener, or fine dust builds up on them.
Wipe with a damp cloth and a little rubbing alcohol, let dry, then run a normal cycle.

When to Call a Professional

F3E2 is owner-fixable through level adjustment, load size, and cycle selection.
Only schedule service if the dryer is confirmed level, you've run normal-sized loads on Automatic cycles, and F3E2 still appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the dryer count 5 cycles before showing F3E2?

Whirlpool's control gives the dryer multiple opportunities to register moisture data before flagging an issue — one or two cycles without data could just be small loads.
Five consecutive cycles without sensor contact strongly suggests a systemic issue (unlevel dryer, always-small loads, residue on strips, or wiring) rather than a one-off.
That's the threshold the control uses to log F3E2.
