F4E4
Whirlpool Dryer
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Whirlpool dryer F4E4 is the low-voltage diagnostic code on newer Whirlpool dryers.
Whirlpool's exact wording: 'An F4 E4 (Low or No Line Voltage) Diagnostic code indicates that there may be a problem with your home power supply, keeping the dryer's heater from turning on.'
Same fault as L2 on older Whirlpool dryers.
The drum can still spin but the heater can't fire without 240V.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool WED4815 / WED4850 / WED5000 series electric dryers
- Whirlpool WED7120 / WED8120 / WED9620 Cabrio series
- Whirlpool WGD4815 / WGD5000 / WGD7120 series gas dryers
- Whirlpool Compact Heat Pump dryers (WHD862, WHD560)
- Same F+E codes appear on Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana dryers (shared platform)
Common Causes
- One of the two 30-amp circuit breakers tripped (electric dryers need both)
- Loose power cord terminal screws at the dryer connection
- Home supply not actually 240V (running on 120V from temporary wiring)
- Voltage drop on a long undersized circuit run
- Damaged power cord between the wall and the dryer
How to Fix It
-
Check both 30-amp breakers.
Whirlpool: 'Check both 30-amp circuit breakers (electric dryers require two separate breakers — one for the motor, one for heating).'
At the breaker panel, find the dryer's double-pole 30A breaker.
If one side is mid-position between OFF and ON, flip both sides fully OFF and back ON. -
Verify the 240V supply.
Whirlpool: 'Electric dryers require a 240-volt power supply. If you do not have 240-volt, your electric dryer will not operate correctly.'
If the dryer is connected via temporary wiring or an adapter to a 120V outlet, the heater can't work — F4E4 will appear immediately on any heated cycle. -
Inspect the power cord terminals.
Whirlpool: 'Ensure the power cord is properly installed and terminal screws are tight at the dryer.'
Switch the breaker off first.
Pull the small access cover at the back of the dryer where the cord attaches.
Check that each terminal screw is firm and the wire is fully seated. -
Power cycle for 1 minute.
Whirlpool: 'Turn off circuit breaker(s) for one minute, then back on, and start a time dry cycle.'
This clears the logged F4E4 from the control's memory after you've addressed the supply.
When to Call a Professional
F4E4 is a power-supply issue, not a dryer fault.
Call a qualified electrician (not Whirlpool service) if the breakers and power cord are confirmed good and F4E4 still appears — the home wiring needs checking.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is F4E4 different from L2?
Same fault, different display.
F4E4 appears on newer Whirlpool dryers with dot-matrix displays that can show the full F+E format.
L2 appears on older Whirlpool dryers with simpler 3-character displays.
Whirlpool's published troubleshooting for both is word-for-word identical: check breakers, verify 240V, check terminal screws, power cycle.
