A network-related error occurred
Barnes & Noble Nook
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Nook 'A network-related error occurred' is the verbatim text inside the Nook 'Network Problem' dialog.
The full message: 'A network-related error occurred. You may have lost connectivity to the local wireless network. Press continue and we'll try to test your connection.'
It appears most often on older Nook tablets that haven't been updated to support TLS 1.2 — Barnes & Noble retired older TLS versions in 2018, and any Nook left on pre-2018 firmware shows this error every time it tries to reach B&N.
Affected Models
- Nook HD and Nook HD+ tablets
- Nook Color and Nook Tablet (BNTV250 and earlier)
- Older Nook Simple Touch with Wi-Fi issues
- Newer Nook GlowLight 3 / 4 / 4e if Wi-Fi signal drops mid-session
- Common on Nook tablets that have been stored for years without firmware updates
Common Causes
- Nook firmware predates TLS 1.2 support and Barnes & Noble's servers reject the old protocol
- Wi-Fi connection genuinely dropped mid-operation
- Wi-Fi network has captive portal that needs login before reaching B&N
- Router rebooted or password changed since the Nook last connected
- B&N servers temporarily unavailable (rare)
How to Fix It
-
Check Wi-Fi signal first.
Pull down the Nook status bar (or open Settings > Wi-Fi) and check signal strength.
If signal is weak, move closer to the router.
A weak signal frequently causes the 'network-related error occurred' message even on a fully-updated Nook. -
Forget and re-join the Wi-Fi network.
Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the network > Forget.
Then re-add the network and re-enter the password.
This clears stale credentials and is the most common fix for a one-off network error. -
Check if it's a TLS-required update issue.
If you have a Nook HD, Nook HD+, Nook Color, or Nook Tablet (pre-2014 models), the error is almost certainly TLS 1.2.
These devices need a manual firmware update that Barnes & Noble published in 2018.
The update can only be applied via USB from a computer — the over-the-air update path is broken on these older models because that path itself needs TLS 1.2 to work. -
Apply the manual TLS update via USB.
Visit Barnes & Noble's Nook support site on a computer.
Find your specific Nook model in the manual updates section.
Download the update file.
Connect the Nook to the computer via USB.
Locate the Nook drive and click the download link from B&N — select Save As to save the file to the My Nook root directory.
Safely disconnect.
The Nook detects the file on its next boot and installs it.
After the update, Wi-Fi and B&N connections work again. -
Restart the Nook.
If you're on a current Nook GlowLight and this is just an intermittent error, hold the power button for 10 seconds to fully shut down.
Wait 30 seconds.
Power back on.
Try connecting again.
A full restart clears the stuck network state that triggers a one-off 'network-related error'. -
Test on a different Wi-Fi network.
Try a phone hotspot or a friend's Wi-Fi.
If the Nook reaches B&N fine on a different network, your home network's configuration is the issue (captive portal, MAC filtering, or DNS issue).
If the Nook fails everywhere, the Nook itself or B&N's servers are the cause.
When to Call a Professional
If a manual firmware update doesn't clear the network error on a years-old Nook tablet, the device may be permanently locked out of the B&N store.
Barnes & Noble published manual update files for the older Nook tablets — applying the update via USB from a computer is the only path back to a working B&N connection on those models.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Nook HD says this error and the manual update files aren't on the B&N site — what now?
Barnes & Noble has been quietly removing some of the oldest manual update files over the years.
If the file for your specific model is no longer available on bn.com, the XDA Developers forums historically host community-archived copies of the original update files — search XDA for your exact Nook model number and 'manual update'.
Apply the file the same way: copy to the Nook root over USB, disconnect, let it install on boot.
Note that the older the model, the more likely the B&N store itself has dropped server support — in some cases a 12-year-old Nook simply can't connect to B&N anymore even with TLS 1.2 working.
