E1
Duraflame Electric Fireplace
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Duraflame E1 error means the internal overheat protection sensor has tripped and cut power to the heater.
Unplug the unit, allow 30 minutes to cool, then check for blocked air vents before restarting.
How to Fix It
-
Unplug and allow the unit to cool
Switch the fireplace off and unplug it from the mains.
Allow at least 30 minutes for the unit to cool down completely.
The thermal protection sensor requires the internal temperature to drop before it will reset. -
Check and clear the air intake and exhaust vents
Locate the air intake vents (usually at the bottom or rear of the unit) and the warm air outlet (usually at the top or front).
Clear any dust, pet hair, or objects blocking these vents.
Restricted airflow is the most common cause of E1 on Duraflame fireplaces. -
Ensure adequate clearance around the unit
Duraflame electric fireplaces require at least 30 cm (12 inches) of clear space above, to each side, and in front of the unit.
Placing it in a recess or too close to furniture restricts the hot air from escaping and causes overheating. -
Vacuum the interior vent area
Use a vacuum with a narrow nozzle attachment to remove dust from inside the air vents.
Dust accumulation over time insulates the heating components and causes the thermal sensor to trip more easily. -
Restart after cooling
After 30 minutes, plug the unit back in and press the power button.
The E1 error should clear and the heater should resume normal operation.
If E1 returns within minutes of restarting, a fault remains in the heater assembly. -
Contact Duraflame support if E1 recurs
If E1 continues to appear even with clean, clear vents and adequate clearance, the thermal fuse or heating element thermostat has failed and needs professional service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Duraflame E1 error in a cold room — why is it overheating?
E1 can be triggered in a cold room if the vents are blocked — the air temperature in the room is unrelated.
Check that the unit vents are clear and that nothing has fallen against the back or sides of the fireplace.
Duraflame flame effect still works after E1 but no heat — normal?
Yes.
The E1 error disables the heating element only, not the flame effect display.
The decorative flame display continues to operate independently.
This confirms E1 is a heater-specific fault.
How do I prevent Duraflame E1 errors in future?
Clean the air vents with a vacuum every month, maintain the required clearance around the unit, and avoid running the heater at maximum output continuously for more than 4–6 hours.
Allow the unit to rest and cool down between extended sessions.
