E1

Napoleon Electric Fireplace

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Napoleon electric fireplace E1 error means the thermal overload protection has tripped.
Switch off and unplug the unit, allow 30 minutes to cool, clear the air vents, then restart.
E1 will clear automatically once cooled.

How to Fix It

  1. Switch off and unplug the fireplace

Turn the fireplace off using the power switch, then unplug from the mains.
Do not attempt to restart immediately — the thermal protection sensor requires a full cool-down before it will reset.

  2. Clear the air intake and exhaust vents

Check the air intake grilles (rear or bottom of the unit) and the warm air outlet (usually top front).
Vacuum out dust, hair, and debris with a brush attachment.
Napoleon fireplaces are sensitive to vent blockage — even partial obstruction triggers E1.

  3. Ensure adequate clearance

Napoleon electric fireplaces require at least 30 cm of clear space around all warm air outlets.
Remove objects, furniture, and curtains from the immediate area around the fireplace.

  4. Wait 30 minutes, then restart

After clearing the vents and ensuring clearance, wait a full 30 minutes, then plug back in and power on.
The E1 error should no longer be displayed.
If E1 returns within minutes, the thermal fuse has blown and needs replacement.

  5. Contact Napoleon support for persistent E1

Napoleon electric fireplaces are manufactured in Canada and carry a warranty.
If E1 persists after cleaning and the cool-down period, contact Napoleon customer support for warranty service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Napoleon E1 error only in winter when heating is on high — cause?

E1 occurring only on the high heat setting with adequate clearance may indicate a slightly over-sensitive thermal sensor.
Try running on the medium or low heat setting.
If E1 does not occur on a lower setting, the heater is operating at its thermal limit.

Napoleon fireplace E1 cleared but E1 keeps coming back every hour — why?

Recurring E1 every hour suggests the unit is overheating during normal use due to an internal component fault (e.g. a failing fan that should be cooling the heating element).
Contact Napoleon support.

Napoleon E1 error appeared the first time I used the unit — is that normal?

E1 on first use can indicate the unit was installed with a vent blocked or pressed against a wall.
Check that all four sides and the top of the unit have clear space as specified in the installation instructions.
