2162-0002
Nintendo Nintendo Switch
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
The 2162-0002 error means your Nintendo Switch has encountered a critical system error it cannot recover from on its own. The console's operating system has found a problem severe enough to stop normal operation. This often requires a factory reset or a repair by Nintendo.
Affected Models
- Nintendo Switch
- Nintendo Switch OLED
- Nintendo Switch Lite
Common Causes
- The system software became corrupted during an update that was interrupted or failed
- Internal storage (NAND flash memory) on the console is damaged or developing faults
- An unofficial modification or homebrew software has damaged core system files
- A hardware component has failed, causing the operating system to crash on startup
- The console overheated repeatedly, causing damage to internal components over time
How to Fix It
-
Try a forced restart first. Hold the power button for 12 seconds until the console shuts off completely. Wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on normally.
Sometimes this error appears as a one-time glitch. A clean, forced restart is always worth attempting before anything more drastic.
-
Remove the microSD card and try booting without it. Eject the microSD card from the slot on the top of the console, then power it on.
A faulty microSD card can occasionally trigger system errors. If the console boots without the card, replace the microSD card.
-
Access Recovery Mode if the console will not boot normally. Hold Volume Up + Volume Down simultaneously, then press the Power button while still holding both volume buttons.
From Recovery Mode, you can try System Update or Initialise Console. Use Initialise only as a last resort — it deletes all saved data.
-
Attempt a system update from Recovery Mode if available. Selecting System Update in Recovery Mode connects to Nintendo's servers and may be able to repair the damaged system software.
This requires a working internet connection. The console will need to be in range of your Wi-Fi network.
-
If no other steps work, initialise the console from Recovery Mode as a last resort. Select Initialise Console and follow the on-screen instructions.
WARNING: Initialising deletes all locally stored save data and installed games. Save data backed up to Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves can be restored after setup.

If the steps below do not work, contact Nintendo Support at 1-800-255-3700 or visit en-americas-support.nintendo.com. Do not open the console yourself — this voids your warranty. Frequently Asked Questions
I initialised the console and it still shows the same error. What now?
If the error persists even after a full factory reset, the problem is almost certainly hardware. This means a component inside the console — likely the internal storage chip — has failed. At this point, contact Nintendo Support. The console will need professional repair or replacement.
Will Nintendo repair my console for free?
If the console is within its one-year warranty and the damage is not caused by physical impact, liquid, or unofficial modifications, Nintendo will typically repair it at no cost. If the warranty has expired, repairs are still available but may have a fee. Check your purchase date and contact Nintendo Support for a repair estimate.
Can I back up my save data before initialising?
If you can still access System Settings, go to Data Management > Save Data Cloud to back up saves to Nintendo Switch Online. If the console is stuck at the error and cannot reach settings, unfortunately the data may not be recoverable without professional data recovery tools. This is why Nintendo recommends enabling automatic cloud save backups as a routine precaution.
