CE-30774-1

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

CE-30774-1 means a system software update could not start on your PlayStation. The update file may be corrupted, the internet connection dropped during download, or there is not enough storage space. This error does not damage your console — it just means the update did not run.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro
  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

Common Causes

  • The update file downloaded incorrectly or became corrupted
  • The internet connection dropped while the update was downloading
  • There is not enough free space on the hard drive to store the update
  • A USB drive used for manual updating is not formatted correctly or has the wrong file structure
  • A temporary glitch in the PlayStation's system software prevented the update from launching

How to Fix It

  1. Delete the failed update file. Go to Notifications, find the failed update, press Options, and delete it. Then go to Settings > System Software Update to try downloading again.

The downloaded file is likely corrupted. Deleting it and redownloading fresh usually fixes the issue.

  2. Free up storage space. Go to Settings > Storage and check how much free space you have. Delete games or apps you no longer need to ensure at least 10 GB is free.

System updates need extra temporary space to install. Not having enough free space is one of the most common causes.

  3. Use a wired ethernet connection and retry the update. Plug a cable from the PS4/PS5 directly into your router, then go to Settings > System Software Update.

A stable wired connection prevents the download from being interrupted halfway through.

  4. Try updating using a USB drive. Download the system software update file from PlayStation's website onto a USB drive. Go to Settings > System Software Update > Update via USB Storage.

This bypasses the internet entirely. It is useful if your network connection is the problem.

  5. If nothing else works, try Safe Mode. Turn off the console, hold the power button for 7 seconds, and select 'Update System Software' from the Safe Mode menu.

Safe Mode bypasses the regular software environment and can install updates that fail through normal means.

When to Call a Professional

CE-30774-1 is a software error and does not require a hardware repair. If your PlayStation cannot update at all and none of the steps below help, contact PlayStation Support. In rare cases a corrupted system partition may need to be reinstalled using Safe Mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to use my PlayStation while waiting to update?

Yes. You can still play games offline while the update is pending. Online features and multiplayer may be restricted until the update is installed. It is best to complete the update as soon as possible for security and stability improvements.

How much free space do I need for a PS4 system update?

You need about double the size of the update file as free space. Most system updates are between 300 MB and 1 GB. As a general rule, keep at least 5 to 10 GB free at all times on your PlayStation's storage.

What format does the USB drive need to be for PS4 updates?

The USB drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. You must create a folder called PS4 on the drive, then a folder called UPDATE inside it. Place the update file (named PS4UPDATE.PUP) inside the UPDATE folder. The exact file name and folder structure must be correct or the PS4 will not recognize it.
