CE-34697-9

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

CE-34697-9 means your PlayStation failed to install a system software update. The update file may be incomplete, corrupted, or your storage may be full. This error does not damage your console — you can try the update again.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • The update download was interrupted before it completed, leaving a corrupted file
  • There is not enough free space on the hard drive to install the update
  • The hard drive is failing and cannot write the update files correctly
  • The internet connection dropped during the download phase
  • The update file downloaded via USB was the wrong version or improperly formatted

How to Fix It

  1. Delete the failed update and try again. Go to Notifications > Downloads, find the failed update, press Options, and delete it. Then go to Settings > System Software Update to download it fresh.

A partially downloaded or corrupted update file is the most common cause of this error.

  2. Free up storage space. Go to Settings > Storage > System Storage and delete games, screenshots, or video clips you no longer need. Updates need several gigabytes of free space to install.

The PS4 needs extra space beyond the update file size to extract and install it properly.

  3. Try updating in Safe Mode. Turn off the PS4 completely. Hold the power button for 7 seconds until a second beep. In Safe Mode, select option 3: Update System Software.

Safe Mode uses fewer background processes, which can help when the normal update method keeps failing.

  4. Update using a USB drive. On a computer, download the full PS4 update file from PlayStation's website to a USB drive in the correct folder structure (PS4 > UPDATE > PS4UPDATE.PUP). Then install from Safe Mode.

The USB update method bypasses network issues and is reliable when online updates keep failing.

  5. Run Database Rebuild. In Safe Mode, select option 5: Rebuild Database. This can fix file system errors that prevent updates from being written correctly.

Rebuild Database is safe — it does not delete your games or saved data.

When to Call a Professional

If CE-34697-9 persists after trying all steps below, your hard drive may be failing. A failing hard drive cannot reliably write update files. Consider replacing the hard drive or visiting a PlayStation repair service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to use my PS4 if an update fails to install?

Yes, your PS4 will still work normally after a failed update. The console will keep prompting you to install the update. You can dismiss the prompt and play games — just try the update again when convenient.

How much free space do I need for a PS4 system update?

Major PS4 updates are typically 400 MB to 1 GB in size. However, the console needs additional working space to extract the update. As a rule, keep at least 5 GB of free space on your PS4 at all times.

Where do I download the PS4 update file for a USB install?

Go to playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps4/system-software/ on a computer. Scroll down to find the full reinstallation file download link. Make sure you download the full reinstallation file (not the update file) if your PS4 cannot update at all.
