CE-35694-7

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The CE-35694-7 error means there is not enough free space on your PlayStation's storage to complete the operation. This can happen when downloading a game, installing an update, or copying data. PlayStation needs extra working space beyond the file size itself, which is why you may see this error even when it looks like you have enough room.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro
  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

Common Causes

  • Your hard drive or SSD does not have enough free space for the download plus the temporary installation files
  • A large game update requires extra space to copy and patch the existing game files
  • Leftover data from failed downloads or unfinished installations is taking up hidden space
  • Saved screenshots and video clips have accumulated and filled up storage over time
  • Multiple large games are installed and there is very little room left

How to Fix It

  1. Check how much free space you have. Go to Settings > Storage and look at the bar graph showing used and free space.

You generally need at least double the file size free. A 50 GB game may need 100 GB of free space to install.

  2. Delete games you are not currently playing. Go to Settings > Storage > Games and Apps, select games you want to remove, and delete them.

Deleting a game does not delete your save data. You can always redownload it later from your Library.

  3. Clear your capture gallery. Go to Settings > Storage > Capture Gallery and delete old screenshots and video clips you no longer need.

Video clips especially take up a lot of space. A single hour of gameplay recording can use several gigabytes.

  4. Move games to an external USB hard drive. Connect a USB drive with at least 250 GB, then go to Settings > Storage and move games to the external drive.

PS4 games can run directly from an external drive. PS5 games must be on the internal SSD to play but can be stored externally.

  5. If the error persists after freeing space, rebuild the database. Boot into Safe Mode by holding the power button for 7 seconds, then select 'Rebuild Database.'

This cleans up hidden leftover files from failed installations and frees up space that the system was not showing.

When to Call a Professional

This error does not mean your hardware is broken. It is simply a storage capacity issue that you can fix yourself. If you want more space long-term, consider upgrading your internal hard drive or adding an external USB drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does PlayStation need more space than the actual file size?

PlayStation copies the entire game to a temporary location during updates and installations. It needs the original files plus the new files at the same time. Once the installation finishes, the temporary copy is deleted and the space is freed.

Can I add more storage to my PlayStation?

Yes. PS4 supports external USB hard drives up to 8 TB. PS5 supports both an internal M.2 SSD expansion slot and external USB drives. External drives are the easiest option — just plug in and format.

Will deleting a game lose my progress?

No. Save data and game data are stored separately. Deleting a game only removes the installed application files. Your saves remain on the console and can also be backed up to the cloud with PS Plus.
