NW-31250-1

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

NW-31250-1 means your PlayStation connected to your Wi-Fi network but failed to obtain an IP address. Without an IP address, the console cannot communicate on the internet. This is almost always a router DHCP issue or an IP address conflict.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro

Common Causes

  • Your router's DHCP server ran out of available IP addresses to assign
  • Another device on your network already has the same IP address (IP conflict)
  • The router's DHCP service crashed or became unresponsive
  • Your PS4's network settings have a conflicting manual IP configuration
  • The router's lease table is full and needs to be cleared with a restart

How to Fix It

  1. Restart your router. Unplug it from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for it to fully restart. This clears the DHCP lease table and frees up IP addresses.

This is the most effective first step for IP address errors. It works 80% of the time.

  2. Set a manual IP address on your PS4. Go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi > Custom. Set IP Address Settings to Manual. Enter an IP like 192.168.1.150 (use a number unlikely to conflict with other devices).

A manual IP address bypasses DHCP entirely, so conflicts and DHCP failures cannot affect you.

  3. Forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect. Go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi > Easy. Select your network and re-enter the password.

Reconnecting forces the PS4 to send a fresh DHCP request and get a new IP address.

  4. Check how many devices are on your network. If you have many smart home devices, phones, and computers, your router may be running out of DHCP addresses. Log into your router and expand the DHCP pool.

Most home routers assign addresses in a range of about 50 addresses by default. You can expand this in the router settings.

  5. Try connecting with a LAN cable. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router directly to your PS4. A wired connection uses the same DHCP system but eliminates Wi-Fi variables.

If the wired connection works, your Wi-Fi network configuration is the problem.

When to Call a Professional

NW-31250-1 is a network configuration issue — no hardware repair is needed. If you cannot resolve the DHCP issue yourself, your internet provider can help. Many ISPs offer free remote router support for configuration problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IP address and why does my PS4 need one?

An IP address is like a home address for your device on the network. Every device on your home network (phones, TVs, consoles) gets a unique IP address. Without one, your PS4 cannot send or receive any data — like trying to send mail with no return address.

What IP address should I use if I set it manually?

Use an address in your router's range but outside the DHCP pool. For most home routers (192.168.1.x), try 192.168.1.150 or higher. Also set Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0, Default Router/Gateway to your router's IP (usually 192.168.1.1), and DNS to 8.8.8.8.

Is NW-31250-1 the same as NW-31194-8?

They are related but different. NW-31194-8 means the Wi-Fi connection itself failed. NW-31250-1 means the Wi-Fi connected successfully but the IP address step failed. NW-31250-1 gets further in the connection process but fails at the IP assignment stage.
