NW-31297-2

Sony PlayStation

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The NW-31297-2 error means your PlayStation cannot connect to your Wi-Fi network. The console can see the network but fails to establish a connection. This is usually caused by an incorrect Wi-Fi password, weak signal, or router issue.

Affected Models

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 4 Slim
  • PlayStation 4 Pro
  • PlayStation 5
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

Common Causes

  • The Wi-Fi password saved on your PlayStation is incorrect or was recently changed
  • Your PlayStation is too far from the router and the signal is too weak
  • The router is overloaded with too many connected devices
  • The router's Wi-Fi channel is congested or using an incompatible frequency band
  • The router firmware is outdated or has a compatibility issue with PlayStation

How to Fix It

  1. Go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. Select Wi-Fi and choose your network. Re-enter the password carefully.

Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure caps lock is not accidentally on.

  2. Move your PlayStation closer to the router, or remove obstacles between them. Walls, floors, and metal objects weaken Wi-Fi signals.

If you cannot move the console, consider a Wi-Fi extender or mesh network system.

  3. Restart your router. Unplug it from power, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait two minutes for it to fully restart.

This clears the router's memory and often fixes connection problems.

  4. On your router settings, try changing the Wi-Fi channel to a less crowded one. Also try switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

The 2.4 GHz band has longer range. The 5 GHz band is faster but has shorter range.

  5. If Wi-Fi continues to fail, use a wired Ethernet cable instead. Plug one end into your router and the other into the back of your PlayStation.

A wired connection is always more stable and faster than Wi-Fi for gaming.

When to Call a Professional

If you have verified the password and your other devices connect fine but the PlayStation still cannot, your console's Wi-Fi antenna may have a hardware issue. Contact Sony support for warranty service. Alternatively, a wired Ethernet connection bypasses the problem entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can my phone connect to Wi-Fi but my PlayStation cannot?

Phones and PlayStations use different Wi-Fi hardware. Your router may be using a channel or security setting that the PlayStation does not support well. Try setting your router security to WPA2-PSK (AES), which is the most compatible option.

Is a wired connection really better than Wi-Fi for gaming?

Yes, significantly. A wired Ethernet connection provides lower latency (less lag) and a more stable connection. Online gaming especially benefits from a wired connection. If running a cable is not possible, a powerline Ethernet adapter is a good middle ground.

Will changing my router channel affect other devices?

It might temporarily disconnect them, but they will reconnect automatically within seconds. Changing the channel does not change the Wi-Fi password or name. All devices will continue to work as normal after reconnecting.
