0x80070714
Microsoft Xbox
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
0x80070714 means your Xbox does not have enough free storage space to complete an installation or update. You need to free up space by deleting games, apps, or moving content to an external drive. This error does not indicate any hardware damage.
Affected Models
- Xbox One
- Xbox One S
- Xbox One X
- Xbox Series S
- Xbox Series X
Common Causes
- Your Xbox's internal storage is nearly or completely full
- The game or update requires more space than is currently available
- Temporary installation files from previous installs are consuming space
- Captured game clips and screenshots are filling up storage
- Games installed on an external drive have filled it up
How to Fix It
-
Check how much storage you have left. Go to Settings > Storage. You will see your internal storage and any external drives listed with available space shown.
You need more free space than the size of the game or update you are trying to install.
-
Delete games you no longer play. Go to My games & apps, highlight a game you want to remove, press the Menu button, and select Uninstall. You can always reinstall purchased games from your Library.
Deleting a game does not cancel your license — you own it forever and can redownload it at any time.
-
Delete saved game captures. Go to My games & apps > Apps > Captures. Review your recorded clips and screenshots and delete ones you do not need. Game captures can consume many gigabytes.
Long gaming sessions can fill up storage with recorded clips. Clear them out regularly to keep space available.
-
Move games to an external drive. Connect a USB 3.0 external drive (256 GB or larger). Go to My games & apps, highlight a game, press Menu > Manage game > Move or Copy.
Moving games to an external drive frees up internal storage without uninstalling anything. Xbox Series X games require a Seagate Storage Expansion Card to play directly from.
-
Clear local saved game data for games you no longer play. Go to Settings > Storage > Clear local saved games. This removes offline save backups — your cloud saves remain safe.
Only do this if your console is connected to Xbox Live, as cloud saves will be the only remaining copy.
When to Call a Professional
0x80070714 is a storage space issue — no repair is needed. If your Xbox runs out of space frequently, consider upgrading to a larger external storage drive. Xbox supports external USB drives up to 16 TB.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much storage does an Xbox have?
Xbox One: 500 GB or 1 TB internal storage. Xbox One S and X: 500 GB or 1 TB. Xbox Series S: 512 GB internal SSD. Xbox Series X: 1 TB internal SSD. All models support external USB storage drives for additional space.
Can I use any external hard drive with Xbox?
Yes — any USB 3.0 external drive between 256 GB and 16 TB works with Xbox. Brand does not matter. Seagate, Western Digital, and Samsung all work well. For Xbox Series X and S, note that next-gen games need the Seagate Expansion Card to run natively, but can be stored on a USB drive.
If I delete a Game Pass game, do I lose access to it?
No — as long as your Game Pass subscription is active, you can redownload any Game Pass game at any time. Deleting it only removes the local installation. Your progress is saved to the cloud via Xbox Live and will be there when you reinstall.
