0x803F9006

Microsoft Xbox

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Xbox error 0x803F9006 means 'the game is currently not available to play.' This usually happens when your Xbox cannot verify that you own or have access to the game. The most common causes are an expired Game Pass subscription, a Home Xbox setting issue, or being offline while trying to play a digital game.

Affected Models

  • Xbox One
  • Xbox One S
  • Xbox One X
  • Xbox Series S
  • Xbox Series X

Common Causes

  • Your Game Pass subscription has expired, removing access to games you played through it
  • Your Xbox is not set as your Home Xbox and you are not currently signed in to Xbox Live
  • The game was purchased by a different account and that account is not signed in
  • You are trying to play a digital game while your console is offline
  • The game's license has not fully transferred after a console change

How to Fix It

  1. Check if your Game Pass or Xbox Live subscription is still active. Press the Xbox button, go to Profile & System > Settings > Account > Subscriptions. If your subscription has lapsed, renew it to restore access to Game Pass titles.

Games accessed through Game Pass are not permanently owned. Once the subscription ends, they become unplayable until you resubscribe or purchase the games.

  2. Set this console as your Home Xbox. Press the Xbox button, go to Profile & System > Settings > General > Personalization > My home Xbox > Make this my home Xbox.

Setting this as your Home Xbox lets any profile on the console play your games without needing to be signed in to Xbox Live at all times.

  3. Make sure you are signed in to the correct Microsoft account — the one that purchased the game. Press the Xbox button, check which profile is active. If needed, add the correct account and sign in with it.

Digital games are tied to the Microsoft account that purchased them. A different profile cannot play them unless they are on your Home Xbox.

  4. Connect to Xbox Live and try launching again. Press the Xbox button, go to Settings > General > Network Settings > Test network connection. Once connected, try launching the game.

Digital games require an Xbox Live connection if your console is not set as your Home Xbox. Reconnecting to Xbox Live allows license verification to complete.

  5. Restart your Xbox and try launching the game immediately after signing in. Hold the power button for 10 seconds, wait 30 seconds, turn back on. Sign in and try launching before doing anything else.

Sometimes license verification fails due to a cached state that clears on restart. Launching right after sign-in gives the best chance of success.

When to Call a Professional

If you purchased the game outright and still see this error, contact Xbox Support at support.xbox.com. Provide proof of purchase and your gamertag. Microsoft can manually verify your license and restore access if there is an account issue on their end.

Frequently Asked Questions

I bought this game years ago — why can I suddenly not play it?

If you bought the game on a different console, or your console changed, the license might not follow automatically. Also check that you are signed in to the exact account that made the purchase. If neither applies, contact Xbox Support — sometimes licenses need to be manually reconciled after system transfers.

Can someone else on my Xbox play my games?

Yes, but only if your console is set as your Home Xbox. On your Home Xbox, any profile — including your kids or family members — can play your digital games. On a different console, only your specific Microsoft account can play them, and only while signed in to Xbox Live.

What is the difference between buying a game and getting it on Game Pass?

Buying a game gives you permanent ownership — it is yours even after Game Pass ends. Game Pass gives you access as long as your subscription is active. If Game Pass ends, games you accessed through it are locked unless you buy them. Games you purchased outright are never affected by Game Pass subscription status.
