Low Oil Pressure

Generac Standby Generator

Severity: Critical

What it means

A Generac low oil pressure alarm shuts the engine down to prevent damage.
Check the oil level first.
If oil is fine, the oil pressure switch may be faulty.

How to Fix It

  1. Check the oil level

Locate the oil dipstick on the side of the engine.
Remove it, wipe clean, reinsert fully, and check the level.
It should be between the MIN and MAX marks.

  2. Add oil if low

If the oil is below the MIN mark, add the correct oil grade specified in your Generac manual (commonly 5W-30 for air-cooled engines).
    Do not overfill.

  3. Check for oil leaks

Inspect around the engine base, oil drain plug, and valve cover gasket for signs of leakage.
A slow leak can cause oil level to drop over several run cycles.

  4. Check the oil pressure switch

If oil level is correct, the low oil pressure switch (a small sensor screwed into the engine block) may be faulty.
A failed switch triggers the alarm even with adequate pressure.

  5. Replace the oil pressure switch

The oil pressure switch on most Generac air-cooled engines is inexpensive.
Unscrew the old switch, apply thread sealant to the new one, and reinstall.

  6. Run and monitor

After topping up oil or replacing the switch, start the generator manually and monitor for recurrence of the alarm during the first exercise cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Generac show low oil pressure when oil level is fine?

A faulty oil pressure switch is the most common cause.
The switch can fail due to age, oil contamination, or vibration.
It is a common and inexpensive repair.

Can I run my Generac with the low oil pressure alarm?

No — the alarm shuts down the engine to prevent catastrophic damage.
Do not bypass the shutdown.
Correct the oil level before restarting.

How often should I change the oil in a Generac generator?

Generac recommends changing the oil after the first 20–25 hours, then every 50 hours or every 2 years, whichever comes first.
Check your model manual for specific intervals.
