Filter Check Light

Honeywell Humidifier

Severity: Minor

What it means

The filter check light on a Honeywell humidifier means the wicking filter is due for inspection or replacement.
Check whether the filter can be rinsed clean or needs replacing, then reset the indicator by pressing and holding the reset button.

How to Fix It

  1. Inspect the wicking filter

Remove the water tank and open the filter compartment.
Pull out the wicking filter and inspect it.
A filter with light discolouration can often be rinsed in cool water.
A filter that is stiff, crusty, or heavily discoloured must be replaced.

  2. Rinse or replace the filter

For a lightly soiled filter, rinse under cool running water and allow to air dry completely before reinserting.
Do not use soap or detergent on the filter.
If the filter is rigid with mineral deposits, install a fresh Honeywell replacement filter.

  3. Reset the filter indicator

After servicing the filter, press and hold the Filter Reset button (or Check Filter button, depending on model) for 3 seconds until the light turns off.
On some models, the indicator resets automatically when the unit is powered off and back on.

  4. Check the replacement filter part number

Use only the correct Honeywell replacement filter for your model — the part number is printed in the filter compartment or in the manual.
Common Honeywell filter codes include HAC-504, HFT600, and HAC-700.
An incorrect filter size will not fit properly.

  5. Note the filter change interval

Honeywell recommends replacing the wicking filter every 1–3 months, depending on water hardness and how often the humidifier runs.
In hard water areas, change more frequently to maintain performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honeywell filter check light on after I just replaced the filter — why?

The filter indicator works on a timer rather than detecting actual filter condition.
After installing a new filter, press and hold the Filter Reset button for 3–5 seconds to reset the timer.
The light will go out.

Can I wash a Honeywell wicking filter with soap?

No.
Soap and detergent leave residue in the filter fibres that can produce an odour when the humidifier runs and may affect mist output.
Only rinse with cool plain water — no cleaning agents.

How do I know if my Honeywell filter needs replacing rather than rinsing?

If the filter is hard or stiff when squeezed, has a strong odour, or is dark yellow or brown, it should be replaced.
Rinsing cannot remove mineral crystallisation that has set into the filter fibres.
