P6

Universal HVAC System

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

P6 means the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) inside your HVAC unit has triggered its protection circuit. The IPM is the component that controls the compressor speed in inverter systems. When it overheats or detects an electrical fault, it shuts down to prevent itself and the compressor from being damaged. This is a serious code that usually requires professional attention.

Affected Models

  • Inverter mini-split systems
  • Variable-speed heat pumps
  • Inverter-driven central systems

Common Causes

  • The IPM module is overheating due to poor airflow around the outdoor unit
  • The thermal paste or heat sink on the IPM has degraded over time
  • A refrigerant shortage is causing the compressor and IPM to overheat
  • A short circuit or electrical fault in the compressor winding
  • The outdoor fan motor is slow or not running, reducing cooling for the IPM

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the unit and ensure the outdoor unit is not blocked by vegetation, fencing, debris, or snow. The outdoor unit needs at least 12 inches of clearance on all sides for airflow.

Restricted airflow around the outdoor unit is one of the most common causes of IPM overheating. Clear any obstructions and try restarting after 30 minutes.

  2. Check that the outdoor fan is spinning freely. Look through the grille — the fan blades should spin when the unit is running. A slow or seized fan motor eliminates cooling for the IPM.

If the fan is not spinning, turn off the unit immediately. Running the system without proper fan cooling will damage the IPM and compressor rapidly.

  3. Let the unit rest for at least 30 to 60 minutes before attempting a restart. The IPM needs time to cool down before the protection circuit will allow it to run again.

Some units require a full power cycle — turn off the circuit breaker, wait 30 minutes, then restore power.

  4. Check the outdoor coil fins. If they are heavily clogged with dirt or debris, clean them gently with a garden hose using low pressure. Dirty coils make the IPM work harder.

Spray from the inside outward if possible to push debris out rather than deeper into the fins. Avoid pressure washers — they bend the delicate fins.

  5. Call a licensed HVAC technician to test the IPM, check refrigerant charge, test the compressor windings, and inspect the outdoor fan motor. These require specialized tools and refrigerant certification.

Tell the technician you saw a P6 code. This tells them to focus on the inverter power module and thermal management systems.

When to Call a Professional

P6 almost always requires a licensed HVAC technician. IPM modules involve high-voltage DC power and are not safe to work on without proper training and equipment. IPM replacement costs $200 to $600 for the part plus labor. A refrigerant check is often needed at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IPM module?

IPM stands for Intelligent Power Module. It is a self-contained electronic component that controls the AC power going to the compressor motor in inverter systems. It can vary the frequency and voltage to speed up or slow down the compressor precisely. The IPM also monitors itself for overheating and overcurrent conditions — when it detects a problem, it shuts down and triggers the P6 code.

How hot is too hot for the outdoor unit area?

Most mini-split outdoor units can operate in ambient temperatures up to 115°F (46°C). However, if the unit is in direct sunlight in an already hot climate with restricted airflow, the IPM temperature can exceed this limit. Shading the outdoor unit (without blocking airflow) can help in very hot climates. Never cover the outdoor unit — it must have unrestricted airflow.

Is P6 covered under warranty?

If your unit is still under the manufacturer's warranty (usually 5 to 10 years on the compressor), IPM failure may be covered. Contact the manufacturer or your installing dealer with your model number, serial number, and the P6 error code. Note that warranty coverage can be voided if the unit was not installed by a certified technician or if maintenance was neglected.
