601

HP Laptop

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Error 601 means the internal battery has aged enough that HP recommends replacement.
The laptop will still work but battery runtime will be poor.
Replacement is straightforward on most HP laptop models.

Affected Models

  • HP Pavilion
  • HP EliteBook
  • HP ProBook
  • HP Envy
  • HP ZBook
  • HP Spectre

Common Causes

  • Battery cells worn out from age and charge cycles
  • Battery capacity dropped below HP's minimum threshold
  • Battery internal sensor fault
  • Damaged battery from overheating or physical impact

How to Fix It

  1. Press F2 to continue past the error.

    The error appears at boot.
Pressing F2 lets you continue to Windows.
The laptop will still run on AC power and will charge to whatever capacity the battery can still hold.

  2. Check battery health in HP Support Assistant.

Open HP Support Assistant in Windows and go to Battery Check.
This confirms the battery state and shows the estimated remaining capacity.

  3. Order a genuine HP replacement battery.

Use your laptop model number to find the correct battery part.
Genuine HP batteries are recommended — third-party batteries can trigger ongoing 601 errors or have shorter life.

  4. Replace the battery.

On HP laptops with a user-removable battery, slide the latch and swap the battery.
On laptops with internal batteries, follow HP's service guide for your model — typically removing the bottom panel.

When to Call a Professional

If your HP laptop has an internal (non-user-replaceable) battery, a technician can replace it.
Most modern HP EliteBooks and Spectres require partial disassembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HP Error 601 dangerous? Can I keep using my laptop?

Not dangerous, but the battery is unreliable. Runtime will be very short and it may shut down unexpectedly. Replace the battery when convenient — the laptop is safe to use on AC power.

Can I disable HP Error 601 in BIOS?

No. The error is a battery health alert that cannot be permanently disabled. F2 dismisses it for the current boot. Replacing the battery clears it permanently.
