ABS Warning Light

Ducati Motorcycle

Severity: Moderate

What it means

An ABS warning light on a Ducati means the ABS system has been disabled by a detected fault.
Most cases are wheel speed sensor faults from dirt, damage, or a failed sensor.
Conventional brakes still work.

Affected Models

  • Ducati Monster
  • Ducati Panigale
  • Ducati Multistrada
  • Ducati Diavel
  • Ducati Streetfighter
  • Ducati Hypermotard

Common Causes

  • Wheel speed sensor dirty or damaged (most common)
  • Damaged ABS sensor wire from wheel / tyre work
  • Failed ABS module
  • Low battery voltage during start (false trigger)
  • Air gap incorrect between sensor and tone ring after wheel removal

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the wheel speed sensors.

Find the wheel speed sensors at the front and rear wheels (small bolt-mounted sensors near the brake discs).
Clean any debris, mud, or metal dust from the sensor face.
Even small contamination can disable ABS.

  2. Check the sensor wire routing.

Look for chafed or pinched sensor wires.
Bikes that have had wheel work done may have wires routed incorrectly or damaged.
    Replace damaged wires.

  3. Verify the air gap to the tone ring.

If a wheel was recently removed and reinstalled, the sensor may be too far from the tone ring on the wheel.
The gap should be a small fraction of an inch — refer to your service manual for the spec.

  4. Reset the ABS warning.

Some Ducatis clear ABS warnings automatically after a few clean rides.
For a hard reset, take the bike to a dealer with DDS to clear the stored code after repair.

When to Call a Professional

Ducati dealers can read ABS-specific fault codes.
If wheel sensor cleaning does not clear the warning, a dealer's diagnostic tool is needed to read the specific code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ride my Ducati safely with the ABS warning light on?

Yes — the conventional brakes work normally. You just lose ABS function (lock prevention). Ride with extra caution, especially in wet weather, and address the issue soon.

Why does my Ducati ABS light only come on at low speeds?

Some sensor signal issues only appear at low speed when the signal is weakest. A worn or partially damaged sensor often shows this pattern. Cleaning sometimes helps, but the sensor may need replacement.
