HISS

Honda Motorcycle

Severity: Critical

What it means

Honda HISS (Honda Ignition Security System) immobilizer error means the ECM does not recognise the transponder chip in the ignition key.
The starter may crank but the engine will not fire.
This is most often caused by a damaged key chip or a weak transponder signal.

Affected Models

  • Honda CBR Series
  • Honda CB Series
  • Honda Africa Twin
  • Honda NC Series
  • Honda VFR Series
  • Honda Forza Scooter

Common Causes

  • Damaged transponder chip in the key
  • Key chip battery weak or dead (on active transponder keys)
  • Foreign interference near the ignition (metal key ring items too close to the transponder)
  • HISS antenna ring around the ignition damaged
  • ECM fault not reading the transponder signal correctly

How to Fix It

  1. Try the spare key.

If you have a second HISS-chipped Honda key, try it immediately.
If the bike starts with the spare key, the original key's transponder chip has been damaged or demagnetised.

  2. Remove metal items from the key ring.

Large metal key rings, fobs, or other keys held very close to the Honda key can interfere with the transponder signal.
Use the Honda key alone on a separate ring and try starting again.

  3. Clean the ignition switch area.

Gently clean around the ignition switch with a dry cloth.
Moisture, metal shavings, or debris around the ignition can disrupt the HISS antenna ring that reads the key.

  4. Have a replacement key programmed.

If both keys fail or you have lost the only key, a Honda dealer or motorcycle locksmith can supply and program a new HISS key.
You will need proof of ownership (registration document) to have a new key programmed.

When to Call a Professional

Programming a replacement HISS key requires a Honda dealer or a motorcycle locksmith with Honda-compatible key programming equipment.
You cannot program Honda HISS keys at home without specialist tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honda HISS light stays on and the bike will not start — is this definitely the key?

A HISS light that stays on (not flashing) after attempting to start usually means the immobilizer is active and the key is not recognised. Flashing HISS light patterns can indicate different faults. Try the spare key first — if that works, the original key needs replacing.

Can I disable the Honda HISS immobilizer permanently?

Disabling HISS is not recommended and is not officially supported by Honda — it removes theft protection from the motorcycle. If you are locked out due to a lost or damaged key, the correct solution is to have a new key programmed by a dealer or locksmith with the appropriate Honda equipment.
