P2
LG Portable Air Conditioner
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
LG portable AC error P2 means the unit has overheated and shut down to protect itself.
The most common causes are a blocked exhaust hose, a dirty air filter, or a very hot ambient temperature.
Clear the obstruction and allow the unit to cool.
How to Fix It
-
Check the exhaust hose is clear and not kinked
The exhaust hose must vent hot air outside — usually through a window or wall.
Check the hose for kinks, sharp bends, or blockages.
A kinked hose traps hot air inside the unit and causes P2. -
Ensure the exhaust hose is venting outside
The hot air exhaust must exit the room.
If the hose is venting into the same room (e.g. under a desk or into a closet), the unit is recirculating hot air and will overheat quickly. -
Clean the air filter
Remove the air filter (usually a panel on the rear or side).
Rinse under cold water, allow to dry fully, and refit.
A clogged filter reduces airflow over the condenser coil and causes the unit to run hot. -
Allow the unit to cool before restarting
After P2 activates, unplug the unit and allow it to cool at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
Restarting while still hot will trigger P2 again within minutes. -
Reduce the ambient room temperature
LG portable ACs are rated to operate up to around 35°C (95°F) ambient.
In very hot conditions (e.g. direct sunlight on the unit), P2 may trigger even with a clean filter and clear exhaust. -
Shorten the exhaust hose
Long exhaust hoses increase back pressure, making the unit work harder to expel hot air.
Use the shortest possible exhaust hose and minimise bends to improve efficiency and prevent overheating.
Frequently Asked Questions
LG portable AC P2 error in summer — how to prevent it recurring?
Keep the exhaust hose as short and straight as possible, clean the filter weekly during summer, and avoid placing the unit in direct sunlight.
If the room is extremely hot, assist by pre-cooling with a fan first.
LG portable AC P2 with a new, clean filter — what else to check?
Check the condenser fins at the rear of the unit for dust and debris.
Use compressed air or a soft brush to clean between the fins.
Blocked condenser fins are a common cause of P2 on older units.
Is LG portable AC P2 a serious fault?
P2 is a thermal protection shutdown — not a hardware fault.
Addressing the cause (blocked exhaust, dirty filter, excessive ambient temperature) will prevent it recurring.
Repeated P2 without intervention can eventually damage the compressor.
