OHP
Breville Pressure Cooker
Severity: CriticalWhat it means
OHP means the Breville Fast Slow Pro's overheat protection circuit has activated and shut off the heating element.
The unit reached an unsafe internal temperature, usually due to insufficient liquid in the pot, a blocked steam valve, or restricted ventilation around the base.
Affected Models
- Breville Fast Slow Pro BPR700
- Breville Fast Slow Pro BPR600
How to Fix It
-
Press Stop and unplug the unit
Press the Stop button on the control panel.
If the pot is pressurised, use the steam release valve to vent all pressure before touching the lid.
Unplug the unit from the wall and allow it to cool on an open surface for at least 15 minutes. -
Check the liquid level
Remove the lid once cool and inspect the inner pot.
There must be at least 1 cup (250 ml) of thin liquid for pressure cooking.
Running the unit with insufficient liquid is the most common cause of OHP. -
Clear the steam release valve
Remove the steam release valve from the lid and rinse it under warm water.
A valve blocked by food or mineral deposits can trap steam and cause the internal temperature to rise beyond safe limits. -
Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit
The Breville Fast Slow Pro must have at least 20 cm of clear space on all sides and above.
Placing it against a wall, inside a cabinet, or under overhead cupboards while in use restricts the airflow needed to prevent OHP. -
Plug back in and test
After cooling and addressing the cause, plug the unit back in.
The OHP alert should clear on its own once the internal temperature drops to a safe level.
Run a test cycle with 1 cup of water to confirm normal operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is OHP the same as a burn error on other pressure cookers?
They are related but different.
A burn error (as seen on Instant Pot) detects scorching at the base of the inner pot.
OHP on the Breville is a broader overheat protection that triggers when the entire thermal system exceeds safe limits — it can be caused by dry cooking, blocked venting, or environmental heat.
My Breville shows OHP every time I cook — what does that mean?
Recurring OHP on every cook usually indicates the thermal sensor or heating element is faulty, or the unit is consistently being operated with too little liquid.
If you have confirmed correct liquid levels each time, contact Breville support — a persistent OHP points to a hardware fault.
