32
Brother Printer
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Brother error 32 means a paper jam has occurred in the duplex unit. The duplex unit is the part that flips paper over so the printer can print on both sides. This is a minor error — clearing the jam yourself takes just a few minutes.
Affected Models
- Brother MFC-L2710DW
- Brother MFC-L2750DW
- Brother HL-L2350DW
- Brother DCP-L2550DW
- Brother MFC-L2730DW
Common Causes
- Paper fed into the duplex unit was slightly crooked and got stuck mid-flip
- The paper type is too thick or stiff for two-sided printing
- A small torn scrap from a previous jam is blocking the duplex paper path
- The paper tray was overfilled, causing sheets to feed unevenly
- Low-quality or damp paper is sticking together and feeding as two sheets at once
How to Fix It
-
Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.
The fuser area gets very hot during printing. Always let the printer cool for a few minutes before reaching inside.
-
Open the rear cover by pressing the release tabs on both sides and pulling it down. Look for jammed paper in the duplex paper path area.
The duplex path is the set of rollers directly inside the rear cover. Paper will loop through here when printing on both sides.
-
Gently pull any jammed paper straight out using both hands. Pull slowly and evenly to avoid tearing.
If the paper tears, use a flashlight to find all the pieces and remove them before continuing.
-
Check the paper tray. Remove the stack of paper and straighten it. Make sure the paper guides are snug against the edges of the paper but not squeezing it.
Do not overfill the paper tray. Fill it only to the maximum fill line marked inside the tray.
-
Close the rear cover until it clicks, plug the printer back in, and turn it on. Send a test print to confirm the error is gone.
If you were printing a two-sided document, the printer may ask you to reload that page. Follow the on-screen instructions.
When to Call a Professional
Error 32 is a straightforward jam you can fix at home. If the error keeps coming back after clearing the jam, the duplex unit rollers may be worn out. Roller replacement at a repair shop typically costs $40 to $70.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the duplex unit on a Brother printer?
The duplex unit is a built-in mechanism that flips paper over automatically. It lets the printer print on both sides of a sheet without you having to flip the paper manually. It sits near the rear of the printer and has its own set of rollers.
What paper works best for two-sided printing?
Standard 20 lb (75 gsm) copy paper works best for duplex printing. Avoid heavy cardstock, glossy photo paper, or very thin paper. Thick or stiff paper does not bend well through the duplex path and jams easily.
Can I print one-sided to avoid error 32 for now?
Yes. Once you clear the jam, you can switch your print settings to single-sided printing. In your printer driver, look for 'Duplex' or 'Two-sided printing' and set it to off. This will avoid the duplex path entirely until you can get the printer fully checked.
