B2
HP Printer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Error B2 on an HP printer means there is a problem with one of the ink cartridges. The printer cannot communicate with or recognize the cartridge properly. Removing, cleaning, and reinserting the cartridge usually fixes this instantly.
Affected Models
- HP Deskjet 2600 series
- HP Deskjet 2700 series
- HP Envy 6000 series
- HP Envy 6400 series
- HP Deskjet Plus 4100 series
Common Causes
- The ink cartridge's copper contacts are dirty or oxidized
- The cartridge is not fully seated and is not making proper contact
- A non-HP or refilled cartridge is being rejected by the printer
- The ink cartridge is completely empty and needs to be replaced
- The cartridge was installed with the protective tape still covering the contacts
How to Fix It
-
Open the printer's ink cartridge access door. Wait for the cartridge carriage to stop moving and move to the center. Remove the cartridge that is causing the error.
Check the printer's display or app to see which specific cartridge (black or color) is flagged.
-
Clean the cartridge contacts. Fold a lint-free cloth and gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge. Also wipe the corresponding contacts inside the printer. Let both dry for 2 minutes.
Never use water for this — a dry cloth is all you need. Moisture on the contacts can cause short circuits.
-
Check for protective tape. New cartridges come with a piece of orange or pink tape covering the contacts and nozzles. Make sure all tape has been removed before reinserting.
The protective tape has a pull tab — look for it on each side of the cartridge.
-
Firmly reinsert the cartridge until you hear or feel a click. A cartridge that is even slightly loose will not be read by the printer.
The click confirms the cartridge is locked into place and making proper contact.
-
If the error persists, try a replacement cartridge. Use a genuine HP cartridge that matches your printer model. Non-genuine or refilled cartridges can trigger B2 errors on many HP models.
The correct cartridge number is printed on the inside of the access door, next to where the cartridges sit.
When to Call a Professional
If error B2 keeps appearing after trying new genuine HP cartridges, the cartridge contacts inside the printer may be damaged. This type of repair requires a service technician. For older printers, the cost of repair often exceeds the cost of a new entry-level HP printer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which HP cartridge do I need for my printer?
Open the ink cartridge access door and look for the cartridge number printed on the inside of the door. Alternatively, check your printer's manual or look up your printer model on hp.com. Common cartridge numbers include HP 63, HP 65, HP 67, HP 910, and HP 952.
Can I use non-HP ink cartridges in an HP printer?
Technically yes, but HP's printers are designed for genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP cartridges can trigger error codes, produce lower print quality, and in some cases void your printer's warranty. If you want to use third-party ink, look for a third-party brand that explicitly states compatibility with your model.
What if only one cartridge triggers the B2 error?
That specific cartridge has the issue — usually dirty contacts or the cartridge is empty. Try cleaning that cartridge's contacts first. If cleaning does not help, replace just that one cartridge — you do not need to replace all of them.
