Overheating
BenQ Projector
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
BenQ projector overheating is almost always caused by blocked air vents, a clogged dust filter, or poor ventilation in the installation location.
Clean the vents and filter and leave adequate space around the projector.
How to Fix It
-
Power off and allow 30 minutes of cooling
When TEMP flashes, the projector will shut itself down.
Press Power and wait at least 30 minutes before investigating.
Restarting while still hot will trigger another shutdown immediately. -
Inspect and clear the air vents
Check the air intake and exhaust vent grilles for dust build-up.
Use compressed air to blow out dust from the outside of the vents.
Do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. -
Clean the dust filter
Locate the filter door (on most BenQ models it is on the side or bottom).
Remove the filter, tap it gently on a firm surface to dislodge dust, then blow it clean.
Replace if torn or excessively dirty. -
Ensure adequate ventilation clearance
BenQ projectors require at least 30 cm of clear space on all sides.
Avoid installing in sealed cabinets or on thick rugs.
The exhaust vent must never face a wall or enclosed surface. -
Switch to ECO lamp mode
ECO lamp mode reduces power and heat output significantly.
Press Menu > System Setup > Lamp Settings > Lamp Mode > ECO.
This extends lamp life and helps in warmer room conditions. -
Check the room temperature
BenQ projectors are rated to operate at ambient temperatures up to 40°C (104°F).
In very warm rooms or in direct sunlight, the projector may overheat even with clean filters.
Frequently Asked Questions
BenQ projector shuts off after 10 minutes — is it overheating?
If the TEMP indicator lights up when it shuts off, yes — it is overheating.
Clean the filter and vents.
If the TEMP light does not come on, the lamp may be failing instead.
BenQ projector fan running at maximum speed constantly — is that normal?
The fan running at maximum speed is the projector trying to cool itself under heat stress.
Check the filter and vents — a dirty filter forces the fan to run harder.
BenQ projector ceiling-mounted and overheating — what to check?
Ceiling mounts leave less airflow space.
Ensure the mount allows at least 30 cm clearance above the projector.
Also check the correct ceiling-mount mode is set in the menu (Rear-Ceiling or Front-Ceiling).
