Overheating

Epson Projector

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Epson projector overheating is caused by blocked air vents, a clogged air filter, or placing the projector in a confined space with poor ventilation.
Clean the filter and ensure 30 cm of clear space around the vents.

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and allow the projector to cool

When the TEMP light flashes, the projector will shut itself off to prevent damage.
Press the Power button and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before restarting.

  2. Check and clear the air vents

Inspect all air intake and exhaust vents on the projector body.
Use a can of compressed air to blow out dust and debris.
Blocked vents prevent the internal fan from cooling the lamp and optics.

  3. Clean or replace the air filter

Locate the air filter panel (usually on the front or side).
Remove the filter cover, take out the filter, and clean it by tapping gently or blowing with compressed air.
Replace the filter if it is torn or heavily soiled.

  4. Reset the air filter hours

After cleaning or replacing the filter, press Menu > Reset > Reset Air Filter Hours and confirm.
This prevents the filter reminder from triggering unnecessarily.

  5. Ensure adequate ventilation clearance

Epson projectors require at least 20–30 cm of clear space on all sides for air circulation.
Do not place the projector inside a cabinet, on thick carpet, or against a wall on the exhaust side.

  6. Check the ambient room temperature

Epson projectors operate safely up to around 40°C (104°F) ambient temperature.
In very hot rooms or in direct sunlight, the projector may overheat even with clean filters and clear vents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Epson projector TEMP light flashes red — how serious is it?

A flashing red TEMP light means the projector is dangerously hot and has shut down.
Let it cool fully before restarting.
Do not power it back on until the cause (blocked vents or dirty filter) is resolved.

Epson recommends cleaning the air filter every 100 hours of use in dusty environments, or every 500 hours in clean conditions.
