39C
Samsung Refrigerator
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Samsung refrigerator 39C is an ice maker function error.
Samsung's master refrigerator support page lists 39C together with 39E as the same Ice Maker Function Error — the ice maker module isn't responding to the control's commands correctly.
Could be a sensor inside the ice maker, a stuck routine, or a failed component within the module itself.
Affected Models
- Samsung French Door refrigerators with internal ice maker (RF series)
- Samsung Bespoke refrigerators with ice maker module
- Samsung 4-Door Flex models with ice maker
- Samsung Side-by-Side refrigerators with ice maker (RS series)
- 39C and 39E are listed together on Samsung's support page as the same Ice Maker Function Error
- 39C does not appear on Samsung refrigerator models without an ice maker
Common Causes
- Stuck ice maker routine that an ice maker reset clears
- Ice maker sensor fault (close to 8E behaviour but caught at the function level)
- Failed ice maker motor
- Ice buildup jamming the rotation
- Failed ice maker control board
How to Fix It
-
Press the ice maker Test/Reset button.
On the side of the ice maker module inside the freezer, find the small Test or Reset button.
Press and hold for 3-5 seconds until you hear the ice tray begin a full cycle.
The tray will rotate, release any cubes, and refill with water.
If the cycle completes cleanly, 39C often clears. -
Clear any visible ice jam.
Open the freezer and look at the ice maker bucket.
If cubes have fused into a solid block, scoop them out manually.
Look at the rotation mechanism inside the ice maker module — sometimes a single fused cube blocks the tray from turning and triggers 39C. -
Force a defrost.
Empty the freezer, unplug the fridge for 8-12 hours with the freezer door open.
This thaws any frost interfering with the ice maker's motor or sensors.
Plug back in and run for 4 hours before evaluating. -
Schedule Samsung service if 39C persists.
If 39C returns after a reset and defrost, the ice maker module has an internal hardware fault.
Schedule Samsung service through samsung.com/us/support — typical fix is an ice maker module replacement.
When to Call a Professional
If an ice maker Test/Reset doesn't clear 39C and a manual defrost doesn't help, the ice maker module needs Samsung service.
Like other ice maker codes, 39C only affects ice production — the fridge cools normally.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is 39C different from 8E or 33E?
All three affect ice production, but they're at different levels.
8E is a sensor-specific fault (the ice maker temperature sensor isn't reading correctly).
33E is the ice pipe heater specifically (the water line heater failed).
39C is a higher-level function fault — the ice maker as a whole isn't completing its cycle correctly, often because of a motor, sensor, or stuck routine that wasn't specific enough for the control to log as 8E or 33E.
