Error 6
Shark Robot Vacuum
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Shark Error 6 means the cliff sensors are dirty or obstructed and the robot cannot confirm it is on safe ground.
Flip the robot over, wipe all four cliff sensor windows with a dry cloth, and place it on a hard, light-coloured floor to test.
Affected Models
- Shark IQ Robot
- Shark AI Robot
- Shark Matrix Robot
- Shark ION Robot
Common Causes
- Dirty or dusty cliff sensor windows
- Dark or black floor surface absorbing the infrared signal
- Sensor hardware failure — rare
How to Fix It
-
Locate and clean the cliff sensors.
Flip the robot over and locate the four small dark sensor windows near the front and side edges.
Wipe each window with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
Avoid using water or liquid cleaners — moisture damages the sensors. -
Test on a light-coloured hard floor.
Cliff sensors use infrared light that is absorbed by dark or black surfaces, creating false 'drop detected' readings.
Place the robot on a light-coloured hard floor and press Clean.
If it runs without Error 6 here, the original floor surface is the issue, not a hardware fault. -
Create a no-go zone for dark rugs.
In the SharkClean app, draw a virtual wall or no-go zone around any dark rug or flooring that causes false cliff readings.
This lets the robot work around the problem area safely. -
Check for physical obstructions.
Make sure nothing is taped over, stickered, or otherwise physically blocking any sensor window.
Even a thin piece of tape over a sensor will cause persistent Error 6. -
Contact Shark support if the error persists.
If all four sensors are clean and the robot still throws Error 6 on light-coloured floors, a sensor may have failed internally.
Contact Shark customer support — the robot may be under warranty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Shark robot refuse to clean near dark rugs?
The cliff sensors cannot distinguish between a very dark floor surface and a real drop. This is by design — the robot stops rather than risk falling. Use the SharkClean app to set no-go zones around dark rugs.
Can Error 6 be fixed without calling Shark support?
Yes, in most cases. Cleaning the cliff sensors resolves Error 6. Only contact support if the error persists after cleaning on a light-coloured hard floor.
