Keypad Lockout

Honeywell Home Security Alarm

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Honeywell Home alarm keypad lockout occurs after several incorrect code entries and prevents further input for a set period (usually 30–60 seconds per attempt).
Wait out the lockout period, then enter the correct Master Code to regain access.

How to Fix It

  1. Wait for the lockout period to expire

After too many wrong code entries, the keypad locks out for 30–60 seconds.
The display may show LOCKED or BUSY.
Wait without pressing any keys — pressing keys during lockout can extend the lock period on some models.

  2. Enter the correct Master Code carefully

After the lockout expires, enter your 4-digit Master Code slowly and deliberately.
Ensure you are using the correct code — misremembering the Master Code versus a User Code is a common source of repeated lockouts.

  3. Try the installer code if you are locked out of master code programming

The Honeywell panel has a separate Installer Code (default 4112 on many models) used to access panel programming.
If you need access to settings but are locked out of the Master Code, the Installer Code may help.

  4. Contact your alarm company for master code reset

If you have genuinely forgotten the Master Code, your alarm installation company can access the panel with the Installer Code and reset the Master Code.
Contact them — do not attempt to access the panel internals yourself.

  5. Perform a full panel reset (last resort)

A full factory reset (power-cycle with the * and # buttons held on some models) clears all codes and zones.
This is a last resort as it removes all programming.
Only use this if all other options have been exhausted.

  6. Check if the alarm is alerting your monitoring centre

Repeated failed code entries may trigger a tamper or duress alert to the monitoring centre on some systems.
Contact your monitoring company to let them know you are not in duress before police are dispatched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honeywell Home alarm keypad shows DISARMED but will not accept any codes?

If the keypad accepts no codes at all (not just lockout), check the keypad is communicating with the panel.
A keypad communication failure prevents code entry.
Check the keypad wiring if it is a hardwired keypad.

Honeywell Home alarm lockout lasting more than 5 minutes — is that normal?

Some Honeywell systems have an escalating lockout — each additional wrong attempt extends the lockout period.
Wait without pressing any keys for 5 minutes before trying again.

How many wrong code attempts cause a Honeywell alarm keypad lockout?

Typically 5–6 consecutive wrong code entries trigger a lockout.
The exact count and lockout duration are configurable in panel programming — check with your installer for your system settings.
