Ring Security Alarm
Severity: MinorWhat it means
Ring Alarm low battery warnings appear in the app for individual sensors, the keypad, and the range extender.
Replace the specified battery for the flagged device — most sensors use a CR123A battery.
The app shows which device needs attention.
How to Fix It
-
Identify which device has the low battery
Open the Ring app and go to Devices > Alarm.
A yellow or orange battery icon appears on the device with the low battery.
Note the device name and location to find it in your home. -
Replace batteries in door and window sensors
Ring Alarm contact sensors use a CR123A 3V lithium battery.
Open the sensor cover (usually by pressing a tab or sliding the back off), remove the old battery, and insert the new one with the correct polarity. -
Replace batteries in motion detectors
Ring Alarm motion detectors use two CR123A batteries.
Open the front cover, remove both batteries, and insert fresh ones.
Avoid mixing old and new batteries. -
Replace batteries in the keypad
The Ring Alarm keypad (generation 1) uses 4 AA batteries.
Open the rear panel to access the battery compartment.
The second-generation keypad plugs into a wall outlet but includes a battery backup. -
Replace range extender batteries
The Ring Alarm Range Extender plugs into a wall outlet but may have a backup battery.
Check the Ring app for range extender health. -
Test the device after battery replacement
After replacing the battery, open and close the sensor or trigger the motion detector and verify the Ring app registers the event.
Also check the Device Health page shows the battery at 100%.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Ring Alarm sensor batteries last?
Ring Alarm sensor batteries (CR123A) typically last 3–5 years under normal use.
The Ring app sends a low battery notification when the battery reaches approximately 20% remaining capacity.
Ring Alarm sensor showing low battery but I just replaced it — why?
After replacing the battery, the Ring app can take up to 24 hours to update the battery status.
If the low battery warning persists for more than 24 hours with a known-fresh battery, try removing and reinserting the battery.
Can I use rechargeable batteries in Ring Alarm sensors?
Ring recommends non-rechargeable lithium CR123A batteries for best performance and longevity.
Rechargeable batteries can work but typically have a lower voltage output (1.2V vs 1.5V) which can cause earlier low-battery warnings.
