PROFILE_ERR

Amazon Fire Stick

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

PROFILE_ERR means something went wrong while loading or switching your Amazon account profile on the Fire Stick. Amazon Fire TV supports multiple user profiles — each with their own watchlists and recommendations. When the Fire Stick cannot load a profile correctly, this error appears. In most cases, signing out and back in to your Amazon account resolves the problem. This is a minor error — it does not affect the hardware or other apps.

Affected Models

  • Fire TV Stick (all generations)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max
  • Fire TV Stick Lite
  • Fire TV Cube

Common Causes

  • A temporary glitch in Amazon's account servers caused the profile sync to fail
  • The Fire Stick's stored profile data has become corrupted due to an incomplete update or power interruption
  • A recently added or deleted profile on your Amazon account has not synced to the Fire Stick correctly
  • The Amazon account password was changed and the Fire Stick's saved session has expired
  • Parental controls or Amazon Household settings have changed and the profile permissions need to be refreshed

How to Fix It

  1. Press the Home button on the remote to go to the Fire TV home screen. Wait 30 seconds and then try switching profiles again. Sometimes a brief wait allows the server sync to complete.

PROFILE_ERR is often caused by a temporary server-side delay. Waiting a moment and retrying is the fastest first fix — no settings changes needed.

  2. Go to Settings > My Account > Amazon Account. Select 'Sign Out' and confirm. Then sign back in with your Amazon account email and password.

Signing out refreshes your account session on the Fire Stick. This clears any expired session tokens or mismatched profile data stored locally.

  3. Check Amazon's website on a phone or computer and confirm your profile settings are correct. Go to amazon.com > Account > Prime Video > Manage Profiles.

If a profile was recently deleted from your Amazon account, the Fire Stick may still be trying to load it. Updating profiles on the web side and then refreshing the Fire Stick resolves the mismatch.

  4. Restart the Fire Stick. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. This clears temporary memory and reloads the account system cleanly.

A full restart — not just pressing the remote — clears memory that a simple sleep-wake cycle does not. This takes about 60 seconds.

  5. If PROFILE_ERR persists, clear the data for the Amazon app. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Amazon. Select 'Clear Data' (not just Clear Cache).

Clearing app data removes all locally stored account and profile information and forces a fresh download from Amazon's servers. You will need to sign in again afterward.

When to Call a Professional

PROFILE_ERR does not require professional help. This is an account and software issue you can resolve yourself in a few minutes. If signing out and back in does not help, the factory reset option below will fully clear the problem. Contact Amazon customer support at amazon.com/contact-us if the error persists after all steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PROFILE_ERR lock me out of my Fire Stick entirely?

In rare cases, PROFILE_ERR can prevent you from accessing any profile — including the main account. If you cannot get past the profile screen at all, a factory reset is the most reliable fix. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults. All your Amazon purchases and apps are stored in your account and will be available again after you sign back in.

I set up a child profile and now PROFILE_ERR appears when switching to it. What is wrong?

Child profiles in Amazon Household require both the parent account and the child account to be in sync. If you recently made changes to parental controls or the Amazon Household setup, the child profile may not have updated on the Fire Stick. Sign out on the Fire Stick, make sure the Amazon Household settings are correct at amazon.com/myh/manage, and sign back in.

Does PROFILE_ERR delete my watchlist or viewing history?

No — PROFILE_ERR does not delete any of your account data. Your watchlist, viewing history, and preferences are stored in your Amazon account — not just on the Fire Stick. Even after a factory reset, all your data returns when you sign back in to the same Amazon account. You will never lose your Amazon content or history through a profile error.
