REMOTE_1

Amazon Fire Stick

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

REMOTE_1 means your Alexa Voice Remote cannot pair or connect to the Fire Stick. Fire Stick remotes use Bluetooth — not infrared like old TV remotes — to communicate with the device. When the Bluetooth pairing fails or drops, REMOTE_1 appears and the remote stops responding. This is a minor issue and almost always fixable within a few minutes. You do not need to buy a new remote to resolve this.

Affected Models

  • Fire TV Stick (all generations)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max
  • Fire TV Stick Lite
  • Fire TV Cube

Common Causes

  • The remote's batteries are low or dead — Bluetooth remotes need adequate power to maintain a stable connection
  • The Bluetooth pairing data on the Fire Stick has become corrupted and needs to be reset
  • Another Bluetooth device nearby is interfering with the remote's signal
  • The remote was previously paired to a different Fire Stick and has not been paired to the current device
  • A software update on the Fire Stick changed Bluetooth settings and disrupted the existing pairing

How to Fix It

  1. Replace the batteries in the remote with fresh ones. Low batteries are the most common cause of REMOTE_1. Use alkaline AA batteries — avoid cheap generic batteries for remotes.

Even if the remote worked recently, batteries can drop below the threshold needed for Bluetooth suddenly rather than gradually. Fresh batteries fix REMOTE_1 about half the time.

  2. Hold the Home button (the house icon) on the remote for 10 seconds. This forces the remote into pairing mode. The Fire Stick should detect it and re-pair automatically.

You need to be within 10 feet of the Fire Stick for pairing to succeed. Move the remote closer to the TV if you are sitting far away.

  3. If the Home button method does not work, try the manual pairing shortcut. Hold the Home button, the Menu button (three lines), and the rewind button (left arrow) together for 12 seconds.

This combination resets the remote's Bluetooth stack and forces a fresh pairing attempt. It works on most Alexa Voice Remote models including the Lite and Pro versions.

  4. On the Fire Stick itself, go to Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices > Amazon Fire TV Remotes > Add New Remote. The Fire Stick will search for your remote.

To navigate the Fire Stick menus without your remote, use the Fire TV app on your smartphone (available free for iOS and Android). This turns your phone into a temporary remote control.

  5. If the remote still does not pair, try unpairing and re-pairing from the Fire Stick's Bluetooth menu. Navigate using the Fire TV app on your phone if needed.

Under Controllers & Bluetooth Devices, select your existing remote from the list and choose 'Unpair'. Then use Add New Remote to initiate a fresh pairing.

When to Call a Professional

REMOTE_1 does not require professional help. This is a pairing and battery issue you can fix in minutes. If the remote is physically damaged and cannot be repaired by pairing, replacement Fire TV remotes cost $20 to $35. Contact Amazon support at amazon.com/firetvsupport if the remote still does not work after all steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Fire Stick without the remote while I fix REMOTE_1?

Yes — download the free Amazon Fire TV app on your iPhone or Android phone. The app turns your phone into a full remote control with voice search capability. Search for 'Amazon Fire TV' in the App Store or Google Play — it is free. This lets you navigate the Fire Stick's settings to complete the re-pairing process without needing the physical remote.

My remote was working fine and then suddenly stopped. What happened?

Sudden remote failure is usually caused by batteries dropping below the Bluetooth threshold. It can also happen after a Fire Stick software update that resets Bluetooth settings. Occasionally a nearby device — a new Bluetooth speaker, headphones, or another smart TV remote — can interfere. Fresh batteries and the Home button pairing method (hold 10 seconds) fix the vast majority of sudden remote failures.

How do I know if I need a new remote?

If fresh batteries and all pairing attempts fail, try the remote with a different Fire Stick — borrow one from another TV if possible. If the remote also fails to pair with a different Fire Stick, the remote itself is faulty. Replacement Fire TV remotes are available on Amazon for $20 to $35. Make sure to buy the correct remote for your Fire Stick generation — not all remotes are compatible with all models.
