037
Roku Streaming Device
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roku error 037 means the channel or content you are trying to access is not available in your region. This could also mean the content has been removed, the channel has shut down, or geographic licensing restrictions are blocking it. In most cases you will need to find the content through a different channel.
Affected Models
- Roku Express
- Roku Express 4K
- Roku Streaming Stick 4K
- Roku Ultra
- Roku TV
Common Causes
- The content is geo-restricted and is not licensed for streaming in your country or region
- The channel or content has been removed from the Roku Channel Store in your area
- Your Roku account's registered country does not match the channel's available territory
- The content provider has expired licensing rights and removed the title
- A channel app has been pulled from the Roku store due to policy violations or business changes
How to Fix It
-
Try searching for the same content through a different channel. For example, a movie blocked on one service may be available on another. Use the Roku search to find all available sources for a title.
Roku's universal search shows all channels that offer a specific title. You may find the content is available through another provider you already subscribe to.
-
Check whether the channel is still available in the Roku Channel Store. Search for the channel by name. If it does not appear in search results, it has been removed from the store in your region.
Some channels are removed with little or no notice when licensing deals expire or business agreements end. This is not something you can fix — the content is simply gone.
-
Verify that your Roku account is registered to the correct country. Visit my.roku.com, go to your account settings, and check the country or region on file.
If your account was set up in a different country, you may see channels that are available elsewhere but not where you live, and attempting to play them will trigger error 037.
-
Remove and reinstall the channel. From the home screen, highlight the channel, press the * (star) button on your remote, choose Remove Channel, then search for and reinstall it from the Channel Store.
A corrupted channel installation can sometimes show error 037 even for content that should be available. Reinstalling refreshes the channel's location and availability data.
-
Restart your Roku and try again. Go to Settings > System > System Restart. This refreshes your device's geographic location data and channel licensing information.
If your IP address recently changed (for example after a VPN or travel), a restart helps Roku re-detect your location correctly.
When to Call a Professional
Error 037 is almost always a content availability issue rather than a technical problem. No professional support is needed. If the issue involves your account being registered in the wrong country, Roku support at support.roku.com can help you update your region settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a channel available in some countries but not mine?
Streaming rights are licensed territory by territory. A TV network or movie studio sells the rights to show their content in each country separately. A channel might have the license for the US but not Canada or Europe. This is why services like Netflix show different content depending on where you are — it is the same platform with different licensed content by region.
Can I use a VPN to access geo-restricted content on Roku?
Roku itself does not support VPN apps natively. Some users route their Roku through a VPN-enabled router to access content from other regions. However, this violates most streaming services' terms of service and could result in your account being suspended. We do not recommend it.
If a channel was removed, will I get a refund for my subscription?
If you paid for a channel through Roku and it was removed, contact Roku support at support.roku.com. For subscriptions billed through the channel provider directly (outside Roku), contact that company. Roku's refund policy for removed channels varies — support can tell you if you qualify for a credit.
