Low Battery
Schlage Smart Lock
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
A Schlage low battery alert (red flashing keypad or app notification) means the AA cells should be replaced soon.
Replace all 4 batteries together.
Use lithium AAs in cold climates for longest life.
Affected Models
- Schlage Encode
- Schlage Encode Plus
- Schlage Connect
- Schlage Sense
- Schlage Touch
- Schlage Camelot Touchscreen
Common Causes
- Normal battery life ending (Schlage typically lasts 6–12 months)
- Cold weather reducing alkaline battery voltage
- Wi-Fi (Encode) drawing more power than offline models
- Frequent use draining batteries faster
- Mixing old and new batteries from a partial swap
How to Fix It
-
Open the battery compartment.
On most Schlage locks the battery cover is the inside-facing top section.
Lift or slide off the cover to access four AA batteries. -
Replace all 4 batteries at once.
Use fresh name-brand alkaline or lithium AAs.
Never mix old and new — the new ones drain quickly trying to compensate for the weak old ones. -
Choose lithium AAs for cold climates.
Lithium AAs last 2–3x longer than alkaline in cold weather and have a more stable voltage profile.
For exterior doors in cold winters, lithium is highly recommended. -
Adjust Wi-Fi settings (Encode).
Schlage Encode locks consume more battery with Wi-Fi always-on.
If you do not need instant remote access, the lock can save power by polling Wi-Fi less frequently — check the app's battery saving options. -
Reset the battery indicator if needed.
Most Schlage locks reset the indicator automatically when new batteries are detected.
If the indicator stays red after a fresh battery install, briefly remove the batteries again for 30 seconds, then reinstall.
When to Call a Professional
Battery replacement is a routine user task.
If batteries drain faster than 3 months consistently, there may be a hardware fault — Schlage support can advise.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Schlage Encode batteries last?
Schlage rates Encode at about 6 months of average use. Real-world reports range from 3 to 9 months depending on Wi-Fi signal strength, temperature, and frequency of use.
Are Schlage locks compatible with rechargeable AAs?
Generally not recommended. Rechargeable NiMH AAs deliver about 1.2V each (vs 1.5V alkaline) — the lock may report low battery sooner and the motor may have less torque. Stick with alkaline or lithium primary cells.
