Lock Jammed
Yale Smart Lock
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
A Yale Lock Jammed error means the motor stalled mid-travel.
Most cases are caused by door or strike misalignment forcing the bolt to fight the frame, or a low battery reducing motor torque.
Affected Models
- Yale Assure Lock
- Yale Assure Lock 2
- Yale Linus Smart Lock
- Yale Real Living Touchscreen
- Yale Conexis L1
Common Causes
- Misaligned strike plate causing deadbolt friction
- Door warped or settled
- Dirty or seized deadbolt mechanism
- Low battery reducing motor torque
- Yale lock not properly seated on the existing deadbolt
How to Fix It
-
Test the deadbolt manually.
Operate the deadbolt with the manual thumb-turn or override.
It should rotate smoothly and the bolt should slide easily into the strike.
Resistance means alignment or mechanical issues. -
Realign the strike plate.
Loosen the strike plate screws and shift slightly until the bolt slides cleanly.
If the bolt rubs above or below the strike opening, file or relocate the strike. -
Lubricate the deadbolt.
Apply graphite powder or dry PTFE lubricant to the bolt and cylinder.
Work the bolt back and forth several times to distribute.
Avoid WD-40 or oil-based products. -
Replace the batteries.
Weak batteries cannot drive the motor through any extra friction.
Use fresh name-brand alkaline batteries — lithium AAs in cold climates. -
Recalibrate the lock.
Once alignment and batteries are addressed, run the calibration routine in the Yale app.
This teaches the lock the new (smoother) torque profile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Yale lock jam in summer but not winter?
Wood doors swell when humidity rises in summer. The deadbolt that slides easily in winter rubs the strike in summer. Adjusting the strike plate or planing the door edge solves it.
Can a low battery cause my Yale lock to jam?
Yes. The motor needs significantly more torque to overcome friction than to coast. A battery that still works for keypad lighting may not have enough current to fully throw the bolt.
